rear diff failing here too!

Well, I just had my TDV MY07SE (so NOT an early model) WITH a ediff (never used/activated) in for it's 4 year service and was told it is failing and needs replacement. The dealer had allready contacted Alliance (the extended warranty people) who have 'pre-approved' it and so the dealer had ordered it!!
My extended warrenty expires in April 2012.
The car has 70,200Km on it and has had no real 4wd'ing and little in the way of towing anything other than an occassional box trailer with some wood once or twice.
It mostly does the communte to work (6.5Km) and the occassional long trip on highways with the family.

I certainly wouldn't say that this is NORMAL wear. AND that I am lucky I have the extended warranty! 4 years CAN NOT be normal life expectancy surely??

Basically means that any future LR products will have the extended warranty taken at purchase and the car got rid of before it expires. Why take the risk, of what is building up to be a rather long list of common issues occurring (hand brake, EGR, Diff, excessive tyre wear, etc) even when the car is within the 3 year manufacturers warranty?

comments?
 regards
Peter

There has been a funny whoosh whoosh noise since I purchased the vehicle - gradually getting worse.

LR said it was coming from the tranny - had it pulled down and both it and the torque converter were like new - maybe just maybe it was the diff after all - won't know until I get it back and check

this noise as I've described above and elsewhere on the forum (no forumites have had a problem quite like it) seems to have now dissapeared since the diff was replaced - there was apparently lots of bits of metal in the diff oil. Amazing that both the dealer and my son (a mechanic) guaranteed the noise was coming from the tranny, so much so that they actually pulled it out and stripped both the auto AND the torque converter down and found nothing and said it was like new - the noise was still there when it was put back together again BUT now apparently it's gone.
If that's what the noise actually was then it HAS been there for quite some time and getting worse - louder.
SO at least it wasn't JUST caused by a snatch - gives me just a tinier bit more hope for the future BUT just a tinier bit

Pbhawkin, I agree and went through the same when my turbo was replaced at 25000 miles on a late 08 build, unfortunately the sum of components don't inspire confidence, ref the diff again a re-think of service schedules by changing oil more regulary can only improve life of the diffs? Again one should look at the number of failed diffs inrelation to number build, as mentioned before earlier car's diffs failed due to oil contamination, was fixed on later models but who knows it's like playing the lotto! I've had my rear eDiff replaced and mostly paid for be Allianz last month too.
It had a bearing noise which I could hear in the 10 - 60 speed range.
Oil was clean but they decided to replace the whole shebang with a new unit.
The only issue was I had to wait about 3mths for it to arrive from the UK!

So If anyone wants a eDiff to do up. Wink

Later ones are no better . The contaminated oil / sealer
mix was not the cause . Bad case hardening . Still occurring in late D3 .......
I waited 7 weeks Rich . What a joke .
