Diff stuffed

4WDriving with the club on the weekend - had to snatch a Nissan out of a bog hole - not a hard snatch but it did the rear diff in. Is there a weekness in the LR diff as well as most other components?????

Sorry to hear that preacher,
There was an issue with early diffs failing. Gradual failure due to wear of parts. So sudden failure is unusual. Is it an ordinary or electronic rear diff?

yes BUT does a snatch wreck a D3 diff - I know if a Toyota snatches in reverse it can easily blow the front diff - but what about a D3 - most disalousioned

yes it was drivable - didn't really notice the noise in the bush as only driving slowly however on the road sounded actually like a vibration and felt blt like a spark plug had come off and only running on 5 if you can relate to that situation - the faster it went the louder it got. Slipped into N while driving and giving it a rev no noise or vibration only when power on.

Did you get under the vehicle for a visual inspection? Look at the axle shafts if they are in tact try to move them around, if they move you've got a problem. Other than that we need more info, do you have a diff lock in the rear of your vehicle (Tow package)?

Its certainly a known issue, diff failure due to contaminated oil has happened to a few on here. I would not call it a major fail point however, there have been relatively few compared to the number of vehicles out there.

The D3 diffs tend to degenerate slowly and start making noises. I have not heard of one catastrophically failing like Defender diffs do. The CV joints are more likely to fail.

I have not heard of any sudden diff failures you may be unlucky. Any noise from it before it the off road trip?

Thats no good DJ.

I ordered an e-diff because the D2's frequent TC activation for the rear wheels made me quite nervous about the diff longevity. It will be of interest to find out if your diff had been on its way out for some time or if all the damage was done at the time of the snatch, as well as what exactly has been busted.

my front diff went in March....warranty only covered "sudden mechanical failure" not wear and tear........they paid up which still surprises me Shocked I'm no mechanic but it felt more of a gradual degrading over time, but you certainly have a case for sudden mechanical failure
Just to warn you,I was informed by my Indy that there are none of the "old" stock around its a new design (I double checked with TLO on here and that is correct)......was over £600 for a new one...thats about 2million over there..... Wink

Hi, just had my front diff replaced today (see post under rotational noise) , (89,000) . but I also had the rear diff replaced at about 30,000 . so yes i also wonder how strong things are built these days . And mine have gone without heavy 4WDing - the most I do is a bit of towing.
Thankfully the extended Warrantee has paid up.

There has been a funny whoosh whoosh noise since I purchased the vehicle - gradually getting worse.

LR said it was coming from the tranny - had it pulled down and both it and the torque convertor were like new - maybe just maybe it was the diff afterall - won't know untyil I get it back and check
