Difference between 1 Premium and 2 High Line audio systems.

Geoff and I had a lengthy chat last night about this, thank you Geoff for taking the time after a long days work.
Rather than take up his valuable time can I ask the collective to explain the subtle and not so subtle differences between a 1. Premium system and 2 High Line system?

To add to confusion there is the matter of Logic 7.
So what is the difference between a 1 Premium Logic 7 amp and a 2. High Line without the Logic 7 label on the amp?
Is a 1. Premium Logic 7 the same as a 2. High Line?
What is and what isn't going to work if one is swapped with the other?

My vehicle is a 2006 HSE with the Logic 7 badges on the tweeter casing on the doors by the way and both Geoff and I think the lack of sound is a duff amp, given that the head unit powers up but the controls for Treble, Bass etc. shows up but doesn't move on the display.

Best
Ian

Standard is 1-CD player, 4 or 6 speakers (documentation seems to differ)
High (Hi?) line is 6-CD changer, X speakers, some amp, passive subwoofer
Premium adds at least HK Logic 7, 13 speakers, active subwoofer, higher wattage amp (guess the L7 DSP sits here, too), 2nd and 3rd row audio controls

That’s how I’ve understood it.

Highline Amp will be silver coloured, Logic 7 amp should be black.
They are not interchangeable.

I had a faulty high line amp, intermittent audio to start with, could alter bass, treble fader but not the sound. Swapped out for a RRS highline Amp and restored all function and more importantly sound.

Thanks Guys, now just as confused!

Mine is a Logic 7 HSE with a silver amp and no mention on the amp label that it is Logic 7!

The one I have ordered is Black and labeled as Logic 7!
Now you can see my confusion.

As I understand it:
A1 in basic Low Line
A2 is High Line.
A4 is Premium and in my case, well the one ordered says Logic 7!
By inference A3 'should' be Premium without Logic 7 ?

Anybody else got any ideas?

You can check if you have logic 7 in the menu of the radio ( bass, treble, balance, fader, subwoofer, logic 7 on/off)

If you have 3 separate speakers in each front door (tweeter / midrange / woofer) and one speaker in each D-pillar then you have the premium system and the amp should be black (definately a Logic 7)

If you have 2 speakers in each front door and no speakers in the D-pillars then your system is the Hi-Line and the amp should be silver.

You can also Google the part number on the label of each amp to make sure which one is which (they are in the form XQK5000xx or LR0xxxx.

I do not think they are interchangeable (they definately have different software).

Perhaps this is a model year thing. My MY05 is a HSE with HK L7, the amp is indeed black and does have text on it. Unfortunately I can’t see any part numbers, they’re probably on the bottom against the cabin floor.

Does it really say Harman Kardon Logic 7 on the mirror speakers? Or just Harman Kardon?

You can enable/disable L7 from the sound menu - bass, treble, balance, fader, subwoofer, LOGIC 7 ON/OFF, etc.

I thought only standard, high and premium existed. High and premium both use MOST while the standard one does not. Similarly high and premium both share the 6-CD changer.

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Java BlackDiscovery 3

According to the 2005 workshop manual there are 2 head units

1. Low line with single CD and integrated 4 channel amplifier (no MOST connection)
2. High line with 6CD changer - requires external amplifier (MOST connection)

The high line has the option of 2 amplifiers

A. Harmon Kardon 6x50watt output

􀁺 Two front door mounted mid/bass range speakers (one per side).
􀁺 Two front door mounted tweeters (one per side).
􀁺 Two rear door mounted mid/bass range speakers (one per side).
􀁺 Two rear door mounted tweeters (one per side).
􀁺 A sub-woofer located in the lower tailgate.
􀁺 An audio amplifier located under the front RH seat.

B. Harmon Kardon logic 7 amplifier 12x50watt output

􀁺 Two front door mounted mid range speakers (one per side)
􀁺 Two front door mounted bass speakers (one per side)
􀁺 Two front door mounted tweeters (one per side)
􀁺 Two rear door mounted mid/bass range speakers (one per side)
􀁺 Two rear door mounted tweeters (one per side)
􀁺 A sub-woofer located in the lower tailgate
􀁺 Two rear surround speakers
􀁺 One centre fill speaker located in the centre of the instrument panel
􀁺 Premium amplifier

Hope that helps

Some excellent info, thanks Guys.

To make matters more complicated! The car is a 2006 MY first registered January 2006.
How come it has an amp in it that is dated 13.09.2006?!
So it looks like it has had a replacement amp at some time, no problem there but mine IS an HSE with LOGIC 7 on the tweeters in the front door.
So it has two tweeters, one each side as well as 4 speakers in the door card, 2 each side.

The radio head does show Logic ON/OFF but because the amp (More than likely) is faulty can't be changed.

So maybe my purchase of a Premium Logic 7 amp (Black as seen on the Ebay pics) is the correct one?

To be honest I'd like to get the sound going then I can find out exactly which speakers work and which don't if any.

The car was owned by a company and was kept fully serviced, though who knows why someone took the Bluetooth module out, hence no sat nav.
Possibly there was a fault, no sound, and someone though it would make a good donor vehicle for a Bluetooth module, after all no-one will know!

All will become clear or not when the amp arrives after Christmas.

Geoff is very kindly looking out a head unit because mine has suffered a CD jam and that has bu**ered the mechanism. Whirr, whirr then graunch! Beyond my capabilities to completely dismantle the CD drive and be sure of putting it back together and still work!! Springs and gears would be strewn all over the floor and even with plentiful photos I just don't think I am up to it. 70 years with eyesight to match and fingers that sadly are loosing their previous dexterity. Brake callipers etc. OK smaller things ......

When the optic link is down you can't adjust the volume. Values won't show on the display.

Pete
The optic link is OK because the Touch screen is working as does the sat nav, hence the assumption that it is probably the amp at fault.

Kajtzu, I think it is too much trouble to unbolt it and have a look at the label.
Two bolts from the back of the seat, the other two from the front, having moved the seat back as far as it goes. The plugs come out very easily I found.
Presumably you have tweeters in you front doors with the Harman Kardon and Logic 7 name on the badge.
I also presume , as it is an HSE, you have Bluetooth and Sat Nav?
It just would be very interesting to see whats on the label!

I do have the satnav but no voice commands or Bluetooth. The steering wheel is missing the parts required for accepting/declining calls as well as the voice recognition button. Similarly, there is no phone connector installed under the center console.

Tweeters are installed next to the mirrors as are the labels for HK Logic 7 near them.

Do you have two rear surround speakers at the rear hatch?

All now working!

Well my 'new' Black Premium 1 Amp arrived.
At first sight it looked identical to the old 'silver' one that came out, but on closer examination I noticed that it has an 'extra' optical single socket next to the double MOST one.
Oh Censored maybe they are totally different and won't work, well I shouldn't have worried my little head!
I now have all the Logic 7 facilities that is intended!
What is the crowning glory is that I now have sound in my D3!

Even better was to come as the original head unit had bu**ered itself by jamming some CDs inside which no amount of cajoling and taking apart would release to the outside world!
Ebay came up trumps in the form a a 'for parts only' head unit and it was 'just up the road' in Hereford, I'm in Cardiff. Well just up the road is still a drive in torrential rain, but at the end was a head unit that the previous owner said just stopped giving out sound but the CD bit was working fine!
Three £20 notes and I was on my way home eager to divest it from its CD player.
A kitchen table full of screws later and I now had a working head unit with a working CD player!
In the car, a few nervous moments with the CD player whirring around to 'set' itself and I pop in a CD into the slot.
I now have working Head unit with a CD player to boot!

Oh and I have the side benefit of 2 UB40 CDs along with a couple of other copies of some other type of music!

Sop to all those doom laden folk who say you can't swap a silver amp for a black one, well, as long as you have a Logic 7 system in your car, a black Premium Logic 7 amp will work just fine! You even have the addition of a single fibre socket to do what you like with, does anybody know what it is for?
I'll take so piccies and post them when I next go to the garage!
HNY everybody!

The original and the 'new'.
Ian
