Difference between D3 & D4 rims?
Reading through the mass of info on the internet I am just getting more confused as I go - and my old head hurts.
Hopefully someone can give me a yes/no/don’t be stupid answer!
I have a 2007 D3 (petrol) with 18” Rims (and brand new BFG KO2’s) - I am now trading in the D3 to buy a D4 2015 TDV6 and have agreed with the dealer that I can swop the rims & tyres between the two vehicles.
Reading the forums both vehicles have a 5 x 120 stud pattern - so there should not be an issue , right?
But some of the other forums / posts agree and others not - talking about needing spacers, etc!
The front brakes are bigger on the D4 and need 19" wheels to cover them. You can use 18" wheels but they will need to fitted with spacers.
Compomotive make 18" wheels to fit the D4, but they are expensive and specially made to clear the disc and caliper.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

The D4 has broken the bank already so no expensive rims at this stage..
Do you know what size spacers?
Wonder if the spacers are an issue with off-roading or the insurance companies?

asking the spacer issue is a huge can of worms that has been covered a few times. Some think they wear out the wheel bearings faster and some don't - have a search and make up your own mind
As for insurance, yes you will. There have been cases where badly fitted cheap spacers have failed and wheels have come off totally. There was one in the news fairly recently where an over sized wheel fell off a modified D2 and hit a small child Conclusion was that the cheap spacers were to blame

Mmm - looks like the compomotive pd1881 are the only real solution. Wife does not like the look of the Tuffant Rims..
The deal goes through next week and I will not get them to Brisbane Australia in time!!
The D4 19” rims should / will fit the D3 - might just have to buy a 2nd Hand set of D3 Tyr’s & rims for the trade in and then order the Compomotive’s - are they any good?

If you need to buy the compomotives you could leave the car on 19" wheels when taking delivery? And sell them yourself after you fitted the 18" wheels?

Agree - but being a tight it’s the Brand new BFG K02 that I want to hang onto..

Spacers/adapters are illegal in all States in Australia. Having them fitted will make your vehicle unroadworthy with relevant fines etc if caught and void your insurance - not worth the problems. They cannot be even engineered.
Only option is to get the the Tuff Ant steel rims (ugly) or the Compotive Rims (expensive) - or as mentioned, later get what 19" rims you want.

Sensible option would be to take the hit and flog the KO2s, get Duratracs fitted in the 19"er, or get then fitted on a second set. Will cost a small fortune to get Compmotives, used 19"ers are pretty cheap. I paid ÂŁ225 total to make up a set of 5.
PS Just clocked location so maybe doesn't apply re second hand wheel prices. I wondered why spacers in Oz was being discussed.

Presumably the price you are paying factors in that you are keeping the brand new K02s. If you can’t get the Compomotives and can’t fit the spacers, can you get more for your D3 from the dealer?

OT: I don't know if the disc is the actual problem. The shape of the inside of many rims is tapered slightly with the larger opening on the inside after the hub face. Therefore the calliper would be positioned ever so slightly further away from the hub face when a spacer is fitted with less interference.
I read 10 or so years ago the calliper was hit up with a grinder to allow the less popular 17" wheels to fit on the first D3s as there was a bigger range of tyres suitable for off road use in 17" sizes then.
As a further aside, Australian road authorities generally frown on spacers on road registered vehicles by not permitting their use. (Even though 35 years ago I did have an old VW beetle that had spacers imported from California so that I could fit 14" dia and much wider wheels.)LeighW

Re grinding down the brakes, was that on V8 D3s? TDV6s were fine for 17s from the start

Yes Derek they were D3 V8s and it was on the North American market vehicles. Info was posted here by a member (name escapes me) quite some time back. He posted the info complete with photos...
And yes, the D3 TDV6 is what mine is with standard 17s.LeighW
