Difference between Scorpion S/T and Scorpion Zero? |
|
OK, i'm at the point of no return now, need to change my tyres (19") and appreciate the feedback I got last time Re: ATR's.
I am STILL nervous about losing grip as I tend to drive pretty hard on road (DO NOT read this thread if I am trying to sell you my car in a year or so) so I was wondering if I would gain any sort of offroad ability by going down the Scorpion S/T route as opposed to the Zeros I have on there now.
What's the difference between the 2?
Thanks

Mavellous Thanks,
Maybe explains why my Disco gets nowhere near my Dads RR that runs STRs whenever it gets muddy.
That might be the compromise I was looking for.
Thanks

Check on the website, but I'm sure that STR's aren't available in 19" for the HSE size needed!

REALLY like the look and idea of the ATR just not sure I could live with them every day. If you aren't living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!!

I thought the Pirelli ATR in 19" was supposed to be virtually as good as the standard road tyres, just goes a bit further off road I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Looks like I'm heading down the ATR route for 18", although how Pirelli position them on their website chart (offroad bias) is making me think about it again. Feedback on here is great regarding road use though

Where can I see a decent pic of some ATRs then? If you aren't living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!!

Charts are useful, but don't take into account the huge capability of the D3 with its TR system etc.
On the last big outing on Salisbury Plain, there were plenty of D3's shod with road tyres, some of which were near to needing replacement. They coped just as well as I did with MTR's.
I'll try ATR's next, as I think they could be an ideal compromise for me.
For on road use, I do like the steering response & general handling of the D3 with Zero's. Better than the Goodyears IMO.

Good point mine did really when back in the snowy period with very worn Pirrelli's....so even with worn tyres a D3 will perform well BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Set of 4, 18" ATRs for £610, fitted at local Kwik-Fit. Sounds like a good deal.

Interesting thread....
I am an air ambulance and BASICS doctor - that is one that gets called out by the ambulance service to nasty incidents where skills / drugs above those given to paramedics are needed. I drive a 2007 TDV XS with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on 18" rims. I also have roof mounted and dash mounted blue lights, flashing beam lights and sirens which explains why I sailed past a marked Police Volvo on the M42 a few nights ago
Apart from the fact that the Disco handles brilliantly (I have outrun an Ambulance Volvo V70 on country roads) the Pirellis really do stick like glue. The surprising thing is their off road capabilities - I am not admitting to extreme off roading, but they regularly do waterlogged fields, they pulled an ambulance out of thick mud at last year's Leeds Festival and they have yet to let me down on wet Motocross tracks. I like the idea of the STRs but wouldn't risk the loss of road performance, so bearing in mind the Scorpion Zeros have served me so well (25k miles out of the first set - fronts chucked, rears sitting in my garage with 3mm tread on as emergency spares) I'm sticking with them!
Cheers
N
Edit: So not to be misinterpreted, this was an emergency services call, with full driver training and insurance in place, and under the exemptions provided by the law for a private vehicle being used for ambulance services. I am merely using this as an example of the performance of Pirelli tyres under extreme driving conditions. Java Black, Side steps, Window Tint, Painted Bumpers and Arches, Roof and Dash Blue Lights and a Meaty Siren.... lovely!

116mph in a Disco3!!! Very lucky you weren't pulled by that marked V70. Don't think your exemption would / should work for that speed. You have more chance of being in an accident or causing one. My rule is to stick to speeds that are safe and use the audible and visual warnings to make progress rather out right speed.
