Just have to follow the instructions carefully, level ground, min 10 min wait on warm engine etc
Mines been OK and IMO, vast improvement on the D3's
Wife's Polo and daughters Aygo both have dipsticks that are easy to read, like all dipsticks should me - personally, I hated the one on the D3

What your electronic readout told you was that the system was "OK" it didn't need any oil and that the oil level in the engine was above minimum and below maximum. If you had had a physical dipstick it would have shown the oil level between the two marks - Max and Min.
My car uses no oil from service to service so your experience of not using any in 12,000 miles is not unusual.
I think the reason you got a bit of forum banter is because it said OK then you told us you had added oil which could have seriously b ed your engine.

Your gearbox said it was overfilled and you sucked oil out via the breather???
Anyway, putting in any additives is a bad idea for the engine, oil and the DPF. You need to change your oil. The DPF-equipped D4s are very particular about the oil, oil volume (up or down) and the inferred oil condition.
For the removal of any doubt, the engine will have used some oil but the total volume may have remained about the same due to diesel wash during the DPF regeneration.

The Freelander 2 had a warning "Oil Service Required Vist Dealer." This was the dilution warning following an unspecified number of DPF regenerations, and, for me, seemed to come up after about 11 months but always before the due mileage. So my servicing interval became about 11 months. My usage was what I would consider reasonably normal, a mix of short and long trips but always achieving normal operating temps plus a reasonable time at normal operating temperature.
The Disco doesn't seem to have this warning, or at least I can't find it in the book, so, I assume dilution is not a critical issue if you carry out an annual service which is below the 16,000 miles service interval.
As far as I am concerned if the oil reading says "OK" it's OK so leave it alone. My other car a Mercedes E320 has both dipstick and electronic measurement and they seem to agree, so I just use the dipstick, cos it's quicker.
As for additives in the oil NO, unless the motor is making a very loud noise and you are selling it- but I do use 2SO so really I'm a tart.FFRR Westminster TDV8

OK, thanks for that, but can't find anything in the handbook and I got a full year without a warning. Must be due to the bigger engine/ larger oil capacity ish.FFRR Westminster TDV8
