Disco 2 to Disco 4

So there I was with my late (2004) model Disco TD5, happy as larry. It was a pursuit with no air suspension, no sunroofs, no ACE. What could go wrong? In practice, very little. Unlike many Discovery 2's, this one was proving reliable and (relatively) cheap to run. It did the off road stuff I needed with aplomb, shopping trips and local spins were fine. Long hauls were more of a chore, but the old girl did that without much complaint too.

For a while I'd lusted after a Disco 3 from afar, and to that end, lurked about here on occasion. But whilst my old girl was behaving, there was no real incentive for me to upgrade.

All that changed a couple of weeks ago. Whilst in the neighbourhood, I popped into the LR dealer with the better half to dribble over their offerings. Out of the blue, she said to me: "I like this one. Go and get the keys and have a look inside". So I returned with the "sales executive". He said: "What about a test drive?". Well, you can guess the rest. A good offer for my old girl and there was no turning back.

It's a 2010 XS, black with almond interior. (What do you call that black colour with the sparkly bits in it?) And it's a revelation! Only had it two days as I type, but the comfort, performance, accomodation and everything else is in another league. But I guess I'm only saying what everyone reading this already knows. I am so pleased I stuck with my old TD5 instead of getting a Disco3, but even more pleased that when it did go, it was for a D4!

Oh yes, warranty acquired, but thanks for asking galwaygreen.

Despite me extolling the virtues of my previous TD5, I had an earlier one that could have been used as the perfect model for everything that could go wrong with them. Because it did. I am also aware of the reputation that Land Rover has in the reliability stakes, whether warranted or not these days. Although more modern offerings may well be greatly improved in this department, they are complicated machines and some of the repair bills can be eye-watering. Smile

If you have a Makers warranty

USE IT
its the 3 year oportuniy to get things right....after that YOU pay
My next door nieghbour here has a D4 HSE...nice vehicle but he just doent understand it....which is a pity.
He mentioned that the handbrake had siezed up....like many o us as we have autos you tend to use & depend on the P to hold tha car when parked....for some unknown reason he has now realised there is & started to use said Handbrake.
He doenst know "just when" the car beocmes his to fix & not LandRover pay...which I find incredible.
ask whoever & find out all the recalls & things to get checked whilst you can...when you have to pay it can remove the permagrin Very Happy & no matter how the magic carpet ride kossets you & you are able to drive when other cant (& probably won't & shouldnt)...you will realise the cost of ownership

Not a low cost option vehicle to own & things do happen..lots of technology, black boxes, CANBUS's etc, etc....+ many D3/D4do's & dont's...if you are hooked up to a main dealer with the warranty have your self a search for an Indie LandRover person who can knock reality into the situation at a less frightening cost. Find one you before you urgently need one & can check out just how sincere & capable they are...one very near to me I have used on two occasions - I now realise are just as "bandit like" as any main dealer.....you want this ? ker-ching...we looked at that ...ker-ching......this may be...ker-ching...fortunately her where am I can now give them the wide berth they so rightly deserve. Most Indies are ex main dealers...many indies are V.Good & deserve the following they make....some dont don't & you either learn the hard way or pay somewhere else..I'm not going to name & shame - currently
You may be a keen DIYer...I got into some "discussion" on here a couple of weeks ago about those who werent & arent DIYer's (are keen / capable enough to do more that simple tasks)....I personally dont with my D3 - totally my choice, budget & needs...realistically all the tasks that have been done to me D3..are within my capability...but I niether have the time or currently the inclination to take on.
Previous lives on different budgets compelled me to do lots myself - I did what I could & then the complex stuff that needed expertise I hadnt got or was risky for me to dabble with I took to a very trusted individual who did know & it wasn't ever a risk. I can name this guy Noel Robinson - Portadown.
Personally the D3/4 vehicle is an absolute gem......for me has been a good buy....realistic travelling with mega capability.
I just hope (I'm not into prayer) the next generation of Discovery is "as good" & some plonker in marketing decides that I dont need that anymore & because they want to appeal to another socio economic group have to have this that looks like - - - t & hasnt half the capability.

Good Luck !
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

+1 on warranty, my ones due in March. Went in to dealers and had quick look at figures and it's looking good for a 15MY SE (a slight step up from 12MY GS) for delivery in March, holding off until I see the Disco Sport, but it's looking like I will be sticking with the full fat Disco.

Hi Pedros

Just heading down the same route as you at the moment.

Currently got a D2 XS which is now 12 years old. Air-sus., ACE, sunroofs, internal shower but really loved it over the years.
Just thought 'we ought to look, it won't last much longer' and hey presto, we've put a deposit down on an '11' reg HSE.
Can't wait to pick it up (waiting to transfer our reg from the D2). Smitten as soon as we saw it and drove it. O.k even more to go wrong than the D2 but what a beauty.
Heading up your way in September, maybe see you in passing Very Happy

ROY_H, you will not be disappointed. The D2 is an excellent car but had it's faults, mainly in the reliability department, not something I need to say to you I'd guess. And lets face it, the youngest one is now 10 years old!

But, as you are beginning to discover (sorry) the D4 is a world apart. That engine is literally superb. The comfort is sublime and....and....and. Sorry, getting carried away. And it does everything better than the D2 did, be it tow, tour, go off road, carry passengers and be a van.

You're right, there is more to go wrong, but take heart that the build quality and component quality is so much better that in reality it is proving significantly more reliable by all accounts. I would heed advice given above though and arm yourself with a good warranty. If only for peace of mind. Let's face it, any D4 be it new or the first year of production is a significant investment in anybody's money.

Here's to many happy miles motoring to both of us!

Thanks Pedros, my patience is now waning and I can't wait to get hold of my new 'Baby'

Understand what everyone is saying about warranties which is why we decided to go through the dealer route and have a 12-month LR warranty. Worth paying a bit more for the car for that peace of mind.

Like what you're saying about the capabilities, exactly what we want but with all the bells and whistles Mr. Green

ROY_H I went down the dealer route for my used D4 about 4 months ago to get the LR warranty, but I was also offered (and took up) the opportunity to purchase a further 12 months.

It was about £850ish but was going up to about £920ish from March.
