Tongue in cheek and flack jacket on. There are two peddles on an automatic, one is for go and the other is for stop so instead of putting foot on "stop" peddle one may have put foot on "go" peddle. Putting the handbrake (EPD) on will only work if held on as if you are rolling it will release under normal condition. I would possibly go with operator error

The epb is electronic and doesnt automatically release like on a D4
It can be enabled to release on drive away.
I would go for operator error I’m afraid, reminds me of SWBO a few years back. I got a phone call, her car keep stalling and she couldn't move it at all. Said to her to take defender, but exactly the same was happening. She went back to her car, a Clio at the time, and exactly the same, started dead easy but couldn’t get it to move, and yes she did take the handbrake off and it would roll forwards. She called the AA and the guy came, took it for a test drive and was fine. He then said he would follow her to a garage to get it looked at, at the first roundabout she looked down and guess what......there were 3 pedals, she had been driving the D4 in the snow for a few days...........she then had to try and get the AA man to believe her that it felt all right and that I would look at it rather than going to a garage Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I had a similar situation a couple of years back. Wife was stuck in traffic in her Corsa just up the road from our house. I had a phone call from her and she said "the car is very sluggish and I have to rev it to move". I walked around the corner to find her, released the handbrake and voila! Fault repaired! Kev

Lady friend of my wifes did have a genuine problem with a Mercedes 3litre sports a couple of years ago, she was travelling normally on a country road at about 60mph, when she tried to slow down the car wouldn’t, hard pressure on the brake peddle and the car changed down a gear or two being an auto, she turned the ignition off and ended up 60 yards in a field as the steering lock came on. The fault was traced to a faulty module and she never drove the car again. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

That's interesting , my neighbour had a new mid range Mercedes about 12 years ago. Braked hard to miss a deer that ran out in front of him, emergency brake assist came on , but ABS only worked on one side of the car, wheels locked on the other side. Threw him off the road, through a hedge into a field. Mercedes had it back and replaced it.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Still none the wiser but the general consensus is operator error. However I’m not daft enough to say that to her.

If you are rolling it probably wont go into Park either.
The gearstick will but the pawl in the box will not locate into the teeth of a turning parking drum within the rear of the box.
There isnt much clearance between the tooth and pawl to purposely stop movement fore and aft when actually in park, and to avoid inadvertant slamming into park whilst driving
See here :-

It does sound like it could possibly be a problem with the nut behind the wheel!

Excluding user error or a 1 off thing.
The gear linkage could well be the issue. When mine was bad it didn't feel stiff to change at all. The comment about it "dropping out at junctions" was one I definitely saw when I was looking into my issue so it sounds possible, maybe just early days for occasional ceasing. Mine was aggravated by air con on summer days as it condenses and drips on the linkage, and obviously the weather is nice at the mo.
Its £20 part and 30mins to change if your handy with spanners so not crazy to do as a precautionary job. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Think sorting out the gear linkage is worthwhile and saves the problem of driver error 🤥🤥🤥 Discovery 3 HSE 07
