Disco 3 driving while in Park mode

Can anyone shed light on this info below. Received just now from my wife.

“Was parked outside Sharon’s for my makeup. Got in car and started it up, can’t remember what I did exactly, but it started moving of it’s own accord. Put it on park, braked and pulled on handbrake but it just kept moving forward. Steering wasn’t working. Veered across a road and onto a grass verge. Couldn’t get the car to stop, so took out the key. Car fine now and no harm, but very odd. Wonder if it’s anything to do with the gearbox?”

“It just kept crawling forward. Was thinking sh*t, I’ll have to bump into something to stop, but pulled the key out.”

“When it crawled across the road I was bracing myself for a car coming.”

“If I did something wrong, you’d think me putting it into park and braking would stop whatever I’d done, but it made no difference.”

Anyone able to explain what the hell was wrong there.

Is the gear selector stiff at all and has it ever jumped out of drive?

There is a lever on the side of the gearbox that can sieze up and may have prevented it going into park combine that with a faulty park brake.

Why didnt she use the foot brake to stop?

Says she tried but kept creeping forward.

I’ve had the torque converter whine for a bit and the odd jump and miss a gear in low gear while moving offand was away to get booked in for replacement.

Gear lever not stiff at all.

Possibly related to that going completely?

Mmmm. Thanks. Read about that while searching here. Not sure about that. Stick not stiff. Never a problem selecting gears. Only ever occasionally misses a gear at slow speed coming out of junctions which is the TC. She says it was if it was in D and under its own power and momentum. Only way to stop it driving was removing key.

Weird.

Started up again and drove as normal.

It’s a mysterious one. Getting booked in for TC next week so will get them to check the possible seize of shift stick while they’re at it.

Would still love thoughts on what folk think may have happened. Got me baffled.

Interesting fault if in park car can’t, won’t drive, reverse is next gear so sticking lever I would assume reverse would be the gear chosen, also if in gear key can’t be released from lock.
I have just cleaned and re-lubed my lever as I often had to select park a couple of times to release the key, now all good.

Missing gears is not a TC issue... Neutral

Previous post is correct. If it was in Park, the next gear selected is Reverse, so it’s not a gear lever issue

Was she wearing high heels? Whistle so she put it in park and braked, at tickover an auto cannot move with brake peddle pressed regardless of gear selected, my guess it’s driver orientated. When the brake peddle is pressed with drive selected engine speed (rpm) is cut to minimum, try a racing start by putting the gear selector into drive with left foot on brake peddle and press accelerator, you will find the engine will not rev until you take your foot off the accelerator.
Also if the park brake applied all four wheels will or should lock up Shocked
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I cant see how the epb and gearbox can be related on a D3.

The epb is electronic and doesnt automatically release like on a D4
The gearbox selector part is mechanical and as stated before would more likely drive in reverse

My only thought was that if the epb had already failed and the selector didnt fully go into park it may not of engaged the transmission brake and the car would roll forward
