Afternoon all
Still pondering purchase of a D3, Pondering as a Ford Ranger is still slightly in the running also ( mostly for reliability and more boot space).
Now this would be for a 90 miles a day commute ( looking to move job to one closer to home ) but its a steady route with only 1 junction on the A50
I've been through the guides and read the scare stories and I'm fully aware of the foibles so nothing bothers me in that sense
However my one residing question i keep coming back to is are the HSE spec vehicles really worth all the extra dosh or would the same mondey (£5-7k for the right vehicle ) i could have a lower spec but with better miles on the clock without traveling to the moon and back to find it!
Is it a case of it has everything you could possibly wish for and a necessity or just a case of more to go wrong which may not afflict lower spec models?
Any help welcome
Thanks
Phil

it all depends on what bells and whistles you really want/need I guess
its my understanding that the only noticeable difference between the HSE and SE is the lack of sunroof in the SE and maybe electric seats.
you could find a decent up-specced S/GS/XS that has everything you need for probably a lot less money than an HSE.
Have a look at the D3/D4 for sale section on here, quite a few decent, very well maintained ones coming up all the time/ 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

You may find a lot of SE Spec cars were fitted with optional extras from new.
Mine has sunroof, panoramic roof, leather seats, premium sound, xenon lights + many more upgrades all fitted at factory on an SE spec.
I had to do a 300 mile trip yesterday for work in a Ford Ranger and was so glad to get back in my Disco to drive home so much more comfortable.

If I knew my commute was going to be along the A50 everyday I’d definitely have a D3 with air ride over fixed suspension ford ranger. That road surface is horrible, and I did it for 35 miles each way in an old Volvo v70.
I’ve got a GS, I think (no badges on tailgate) but I’ve got full leather, satnav and decent sound system. I’ve often found the HSE is better for passengers etc. A GS is spec’d fine enough for me.

I also only managed to get 30mpg out of the Ranger where my Disco has returned 34 mpg on a longish run.

If go to https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/SE#UK you will be able to see what the standard UK spec was for a SE relative to the model below and also on this webpage is a link that lets you see what a standard HSE offers over and above a SE.
However, most SE came from the factory with options fitted (the most common being Metallic/Micatallic paint).

For what it’s worth, I’ve never been able to afford a new car, so it’s second hand all the way, but I’ll only ever buy the top of the range of whatever car I’ve bought. Somebody else has paid for the higher spec and I can’t really notice much of a difference in price on the second hand market

Was that with a manual or Auto? pondering an auto for the first time in my life, not from any need but more just that changing gear on the mondeo all the time is starting to irk me somewhat.

Some prices are just silly going off autotrader prices a 2005 hse seems to be worth the same as a 2008 HSE with less miles

Both were autos.
I would never go back to a manual my auto is so easy to drive and your clutch foot doesnt go to sleep when stuck in traffic
