Disco 3 problems in later builds?

Hi all,
Firstly, I have a Discovery series 2 1999 and am looking at updating to a TDV6 SE with adaptive lights and a LSD.
I am particularly put off by reports (including the one in 4WD Australia) where it came last in the 4WD of the year award for 2006/07 due to TOTAL system failure (including limp home)!!!! They do say however that it would have won if the typical ongoing reliabilty issues with Landrovers didn't happen!
Anyway, now it has been available for 2 years here and the latest (Greatest) version (MY07) has hit our shores, has anyone experienced recurrence of the earlier problems (mostly computer/electrical) or any NEW problems?

AFAIK the 2007 model is really very good indeed. Very few members are reporting any substantial issues now. I have an early model, and even that has settled down into a superb reliable and dependable car.

The mag article you refer to has been discussed, and it turns out that they exceeded the maximum wading depth and flooded the electronics deliberately which is not a fair comparison.

IMO the D3 is the best 4x4 on the market, and nothing is coming close to it.

Having had an 06MY and now an 07MY, the build quality is much tighter, overall the changes show a vehicle that is maturing very well, many of the MY changes are subtle but do improve the vehicle overall. Software and hardware appears to be rock-solid with all of the earlier instabilities engineered out, there are quite a few technical improvements that demonstrate that LR are not only taking note of issues bit also acting on them as swiftly as can be realistically expected. Many of the improvements made can and are applied to earlier models with the exception of cosmetic changes and major rework (like the chassis wiring loom connector move), TBH, if you are looking for an earlier build and it's from a LR dealer, you shouldn't have any issues

Can someone please advise when MY 07 started. My Disco 3 is a July 2006 build date. Is MY 07 based on Calendar years or financial years?

I just find reference to MY07 vehicles in 2006 confusing.

It's based on Land Rover years Very Happy I do believe it was November for MY2007 ...but your 2006 build should be fine too Wink

Mine is a MY06 (June build), and, to date, no electrical/electronic failures/errors.

I suspect mine has had a harder than average life so far in that it has done 22000km since delivery in late August 06 and 11500 of those was to and from the Top End (Kakadu, Cobourg Peninsula, Litchfield, Gregory, Plenty/Donahue Hwys, and Birdsville). Lots of high speed transits including corrugated gravel, water crossings, some mud, some rocky steps, and plenty of dust.

The only things to go wrong to date are:
1. The front A/C was draining into the left footwell. This was fixed under warranty and was apparently reasonably common for a small build range.

2. One of the ball joints in the left front was damaged from new. The symptom was a 'rattle' in the steering on corrugations. Again fixed (replaced) under warranty on my return to Sydney. The story was it may have been faulty from manufacture. I suspect 'normal' users wouldn't have noticed, (although it might have shown up as unusual tyre wear at some point).


I was a little nervous going into this 'arrangement'. The good money here in Oz is that if you intend to go bush you buy a Land Cruiser or a Patrol. To some extent this is bourne out by the availability of after market accessories (bars, tanks, storage solutions, etc).

I had owned Toyota's before and while reliable they are not (at least in my opinion) as suitable as a daily drive, and are not as good in terms of value for money. The Nissan is effectively the poorer cousin to the Toyota.

So how do I feel now?
It is an exceptional vehicle. I am happy that there have been none of the niggles earlier examples had. It has met or exceeded my expectations. It is easy to drive in rush hour traffic and still has the flexibility to carry/tow a load and be my home away from home as required. I have been comlimented on it's abilities - one notable example was a series of ruts that have stopped modified vehicles with lockers and 33" rubber.

What would I do differently?
I made a bad choice on the rubber. I elected to buy a second set of 18" rims and wait for the tyre manufacturers to come up with locally available suitable all-terrain rubber. Now I am arranging 17" rims for same, since the tyre manufacturers have indicated there will not be any suitable 18" sizes in Oz in the near future.

No towing involved in the trip. I have been considering a camper trailer (must be getting old), but the D3 Oz tow bar looks more like a plough than a tow bar. Might stick to the swag etc for now...

I'd second Haggis' opinion.

Mine's beed treated er, without kid's gloves ...... Smile

I towed a 1.5 tonne trailer From Perth to Alice (through the centre), back to the Barossa via the Flinders' Ranges and then to Perth. 23 hours from Perth to Ayers' Rock, so I wasn't dawdling around! We've entered 3 Western Australian 4wd comps now (we won overall 1st for the year in Class A) which saw many a heavily modified (think Outback Challenge) vehicle break-down. Problems so far:

Er, none Very Happy

At least none that weren't accidental - smashed the air compressor on a rock and shattered the rear windscreen.

Great car, great service (from Southern's here in Perth). I couldn't think of any other 4wd that could do all this in the comfort and grace that the D3 manages.
