I have a disco 3 TDV6. And I love it. It’s getting on in mileage (194,000) but runs beautifully, plenty of power and as smooth as if t were new. No smoke, no major rattles. Great piece of engineering.
However, it has developed a problem.
In the mornings it won’t start! We live in sunny Queensland so it never gets below 10C. Various things make it go. Eventually! Sometimes a few minutes of fiddling with the bleeder valve, sometimes a few hours including spraying aero start onto the filter engine cover off etc. it will eventually start.
However, for the next 20 minutes or so it will run like s$&#. It turns the engine off, throws transmission errors, it coughs and splutters and carries on. It will cut all power to the engine (as if the ignition has been turned off) and then you come to a stop. The starter motor will turn it over but unless you turn the ignition all the way off, it will not restart. Once that happens and you turn ignition off though, it starts up and then it runs much better.
5 minutes later, it runs like new. Plenty of power, great economy etc etc etc. and will then start and run as it did before this starting problem developed.... for the rest of the day!
Next morning, same again!!!!
I’ve had the codes read, mentioned crank position sensor so we changed that but it did not fix the problem. The codes that show up are seemingly unrelated. Transmission fault, egr, crank position, etc. if we clear the codes, different codes (equally unrelated though), air suspension, etc.
It seems that if the engine has ANY warmth in it (including a warmer then normal day), it’ll go easy (it still runs rough for a while).
It’s not using oil, it is not smoking, I’ve had fuel filter replaced twice, new oil!
Only thing is, I had a non landrover specialist change oil and fuel filter. Had a Land Rover specialist fit new filter (just in case that was the problem).
I also had a 5ft long lizard climb into the engine bay from the rear bash plate (I saw this happen), I wonder if there are any temperature sensors on the left hand back of the motor and trans that he could have dislodged.
Other than that, nothing unusual about my day.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It seems that the mechanics take wild guesses, change parts charge for said parts and when that does not fix it, they change another part. In the meantime, I’m going broke..,,
And suggestions????

Hold on there a minute!
Can't help you with the problem but would love to see photos of the lizard you speak of

Here you go! Called a goanna. He was in my chicken coup so I made a lasso thing and put him in a bin and took him to the end of the driveway. I kicked the bin over to let him run free an it kicked back the opposite way. They always run to the highest spot (which just happened to be my Disco) and under and in he went. Bloody thing!

This has come up time and time again. Thanks for the tip on how to diagnose the pump. Would that explain the car completely stalling at speed though?
