Disco 3 towing height

Morning all, my wife is struggling to get a horse trailer low enough to hitch in standard height. If she pops car up into off road she can hitch no problem. Question is, are there any issues with her leaving it in off road height to tow or should she set it back to standard when hitched up and on the move? Thanks in advance. Chris.

It will drop back to normal height if you exceed 20-30mph I believe, will also be more unstable if towing in offroad height.

Is it more an issue with the height of the tow hitch on the car than the trailer ? there were several threads on this earlier this year..

You might also want to consider if the nose weight of the trailer is sufficient!

Thanks for the quick response Nige. I've only been there once when she hitched it and it was fine. It's on gravel so probably a slightly different height each time! Have gone over the hitch height thread and will measure it today. She's driving it now in standard height and it did readjust itself slightly higher apparently, likely to accommodate the rear weight, so at least one of them knows what's happening! Cheers, Chris.

Do you have a fixed towbar or deatchable?

The fixed towbars often have alternative towball mounting holes and if you need a lower towball hieght you can fit a drop plate but you must never raise the hieght of a towball.

Fixed tow bar. I’ll have a further explore today as it being too low seems to be the issue. Cheers, Chris.

For towing single axle trailers/caravans I find it better to use the lower fixing on the towbar and for double axle trailers (and I suspect horse boxes) like Ifor Williams I find it better to use the upper fixing. Just my experience but it seems to work well...

Question, is the chassis of the horse box level when you hitch up? As said it could be that its tipping back. Also is the jockey wheel or any jacks correctly set/installed.

Could it be that the jockey wheel is preventing they trailer nose going as low as it needs. I had a trailer where they jockey needed to go into a grove to full drop, or could be too high on the "slip clamp" so ran out of wind down on the handle (if you get what I mean)
