Disco 4 2010/2011 or FFRR 4.4 TDV8 or 2011 Toyota LndCrusr
Hi everyone I know I’m probably in for some biased responses but need a modern,capable 4x4 and really have narrowed it down to these three. I’ve had LR products before but not for some time- a TD5 Disco and an early Range Rover Sport and sadly both suffered numerous expensive problems which put me off the marque, until now.
I have a soft spot for them but really don’t want to put myself in that situation again, out of the three I like the look of the Disco 4 the best they look top notch inside but don’t have quite the image problem of a Range Rover, saying that though it looks like you do get more RR for the same amount of money, my budget would be £20k and that would get me into a later RR with the revised V8 and 8 speed gearbox, the 6 speed in the Sport I had let go and I’ve heard the 8 speed is more robust, as an overall package though I do prefer the Disco.
Lastly there’s the Landcruiser, it doesn’t look as nice, doesn’t have as nice an engine or as nice an interior but it is pretty much guaranteed to be utterly reliable and hold its value really well, I think we can safely say all three have the same sort of ability off road and all would be sufficient for my needs- it will get used off road a bit which is why I’ve discounted the likes of X5s and MLs.
Are there any common weak points on the D4 or have LR really upped their game with newer cars?.

In my experience Land Cruisers (and I had a few of them from 2000) are much more 'agricultural' - a 'bumpy/jittery' ride (no air suspension) and very diesel noisy engines.....
Very capable of course and reliable (though I had a few issues - sunroof stuck and failed air con compressor spring to mind)...... but as the old saying goes 'if you want to get there go in a Land Rover - but if you want to get back take a Land Cruiser'......
And according to the Auto Press - LR have not 'upped their game' much on the reliability front! 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

If you never need 7 seats I'd go for the FFRR. The V8 is a peach.
Although even with a £20k budget keep everything crossed with regards to both the LR's and hope you pick a gooden. Reliability has improved over the years but they still have a habit of very quickly emptying your pockets.
Reliability is probably the only winning tick for the Landcruiser as IMHO both the D4 and RR beat it hands down in every other department.
Having said that the eldest is a Workshop Manager at a Toyota main dealer and he does plenty of warranty work on Landcruisers.Discovery 4 HSE

Yeah my uncle hasn’t one of the last V8 Amazon’s and that spend a good deal of it’s first year in the garage. New gearbox I think.

I have driven a number of all three over the years and towed with them all at an event, and quite honestly I couldn’t believe how awful the latest Landcruisers are (£57,000 and incredibly crude, cheap and nasty inside, and unrefined and awful to ride in/drive) - horrible. Reliability wise, they MIGHT have the edge on LR (although as with many other marques, I do wonder how honest owners are?), and I was reminded of this recently when a friend was bragging about how wonderful his Landcruiser was reliability wise. Guess what? Only a few days ago he posted on FB asking for advice about a serious knocking sound on the 55,000 mile (ten year old) engine! Basically, it seems like he’s got scrap value sitting on his drive as it isn’t worth repairing.
At least with LR no-one kids themselves that they’ll go for ever without regular (and sometimes not so regular!) maintenance.
I think if you drive all three, you’ll soon discount the Landcruiser - save you money (lots of it) and have a similarly refined and built Hi-Lux!

Having had a Landcruiser for many years we went for the Discovery. Probably equal off road but on road comfort and the split tailgate made it a no brainer. D4 every time..

I’ve driven the shape before the latest Landcruiser, it was a 2007 and I don’t remember thinking it was bad, the engine was pretty unrefined though, interior wise I’m not sure what the newer ones are like but this one was a bit plasticy and didn’t feel nearly as nice of a place to be as an LR.
It looks like the D4s interior is a vast step forward from the D3s-which in turn looks very similar to the early RRS I had.
I can deal with things happening on cars, nothing is trouble free!, I’m more just worried about things like gearboxes and turbos going on cars with 60-80k on the clock.
Is the 8 speed box more robust than the 6?, and is the 6 not too bad with oil changes?, my RR Sport I think they skipped the oil and filter change on the gearbox.
Reliability and the amount they keep their value are the only things that make me consider the Toyota, I think both the LRs would be far nicer to actually drive.
Ideally I think a D4 with the 8 speed box would be my first choice but they’re still a little over budget, is the 4.4 in the RR a lot thirstier than the 3.0 in the D4?.

It also depends on how much capacity you need in the boot! The D4 ic cavernous but the Landcruiser has been ruined in the boot because of the riduclous electric sets, you have lost nearly six inches in height and six inches in depth..

After driving all 3 and buying a new D4, I'd buy as low mileage L322 4.4 as you can find if you don't need the 7 seats, that's not to say there's anything wrong with the D4, there isn't, but looking on the FFRR forum, the 4.4 seems a stronger engine.
The LC150 is painfully slow and unless you've got it on the softest suspension setting, the ride is choppy, the LC200 despite various O ring fixes on the scavenge pump still has a thirst for oil and whoever thought of a car without a sensible cover to go over your valuables in the boot needs shooting.1970 RRC

Thanks for the advice and opinions everyone, I’m going to pick a couple of D4s and FFRRs to look at as really would like to compare the two, I think the hunt for a good LR has begun and the Toyota has been discounted!.
I do prefer the D4 overall but if the FFRR is a better buy I’d be happy with one too.

Whatever you do make sure you get a decent warranty. Lots of chatter in the Fin & Ins section re pros & cons of offering from various suppliers. Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

8 speed D4 is the way to go, and what he ^^^^ said about a warranty.
