Its to assist the main cranking battery with all the other hi etc bits and bobs and eco stop/start ! Best way to charge is to stick it on a trickle charger.

Smaller battery is for the stop/start system.
I use a C-Tek MSX10 for reconditioning, trickle charge etc Paul.

It's the battery for the Eco Stop Start system. The vehicle can left for 4 weeks without any issue, but I would suggest running the car if at all possible for an hour or so, to give everything a chance to turn over. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

I had an issue with a failing small battery in my D4, which showed a low voltage when I tested it. When this happened the symptom was that it showed Eco stop/start not available on dash. This amaller battery keeps the various systems running (lights, heating, aircon etc etc) when stop/start stops the engine. Suspect if your battery goes flat it will show the same so you'll know.
Obviously not a good idea to let any battery go flat so put it on a trickle charge or alternatively charge it up every 2-3 weeks. As stated CTEK chargers will do a trickle charge so can be left on constant charge.
One thing to note, it is an AGM battery (at least on my car it is) like the main battery. I have on record a communication from CTEK support saying that the 'Recondition' function on AGM batteries does not do anything to help - see below:
"Thank you for your mail.
I am so happy you asked !! This is an important topic!
So, recond program is developed only for flooded batteries (including EFB), to remix the flooded acid inside.
The remixing/balancing is necessary to treat an already stratified battery, or to prevent severe stratification.
AGM or GEL batteries are not flooded, and therefore does not suffer from stratification.
That means Recond will not help AGM or GEL.
Reconding an AGM battery does not harm the battery, but does not help either, so we cannot recommend recond program on AGM batteries either.
For GEL batteries, recond can be harmful, because using too high voltage can dry the gel inside the battery and weaken the battery instead of empowering it" Gary

Learn something new everyday
Sorry to Hi-jack the post but...Don't suppose anyone has had this notice in relation to the Stop/Start;
Fault Code: B1479-73 (28)
Dual battery junction box
Mechanical Failure
Actuator is stuck closed
Ive located the actuator next to the stop/start battery but not sure if installing a new battery will cure the actuator stuck closed part or if i will actually need a new actuator. D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo
