Disco 4 HSE numerous errors

Hi all, firstly an apology if this incorrect place to post and has been covered many times before. I spent all last night tracing through the forum pages to see if i could find any info on my fault, there was a lot that was close but nothing exactly the same.
So here goes...we have recently purchased a 2011 Disco 4 HSE SDV6 and on our journey home just the other evening all of a sudden the dashboard flashed up "HDC unavailable" "Gearbox fault" "Emergency brake unavailable" "Park brake failure" "Access height enabled for safety". We would have to stop and restart the car and then lift the suspension back to road mode. This has occurred 3 times for us and can happen at any point on our journey after about 5 minutes of driving. The errors clear every time we restart the vehicle. My partner was following me at the time and said the brake lights where often flickering so we looked into it a bit and found the brake pedal just needs to be knocked to put the brake lights on (a bump in the road would sometimes do it). Also we noticed that the brake lights stay on for 1-2 seconds after finishing being used...do you think this could still be related to the brake pedal switch that was famous on the disco 3's?
I appreciate any help any of you can offer!
TIA

Very probably , for the price of it may be worth changing it
but may also be worth having the codes read and cleared

and of course Welcome Thumbs Up

19sam90 - Welcome.

Sorry to hear of your problems.

Was this a trade or private purchase? If the former you should advise the vendor, and agree how these items are to be fixed - lots here on the forum on this subject.

Hi both, thanks for your prompt replies. The purchase was private and the seller had the vehicle checked over before handing over to me and had necessary works done if they were required, though i guess electrical faults can be a bit questionable and appear as and when they like. I have contacted him and he was very saddened to hear of the fault and offered to come and help rectify it which was good of him. It has generally been very well looked after it seems.

As Sea Raider says the first step could well be to get the codes read.

My D3 HSE used to do something very similar every 3yrs just as the cold weather set in.
But not the brake pedal bit.

A new battery always sorted it for another 3yrs, so worth putting a meter across the battery with the engine not running and see what voltage you have.

Again on the D3 there are also well known issues with both the brake light switch attached to the pedal and even the brake light bulbs themselves causing this type of issue via the CANBUS network.
I don't know if those well known faults transferred to the D4. Certainly not Bulbs if you have LED rear lights.

On my D3 I changed the switch as preventatve maintenance, a £20 part and 15mins work.
As far as bulbs are concerned I found that no matter how expensive bulbs I purchased from elsewhere, they always blew quickly and I knew thay had blown when a suspension fault message popped up on the dash.
When I discovered that the bulbs from a LR dealer were cheaper than Bosch etc from Halfords and used them they lasted @25K miles not 5K miles.

The fact that your brake pedal needs to be lifted and the brake lights are staying on would have me looking at the brake light switch first.

Obviously I'm not guaranteeing the above will put your issues right, but they are cheap things to try.

Thanks all for your suggestions, i have just purchased a diagnostic tool and will have a look at the codes, hopefully it has stored them. I will take the switch out and check/replace as well as check battery condition! I will report back, but any other advice people may have in the meantime I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks again

As you mentioned the brake lights were flickering, I would be heading for the brake light switch. Brake light switches can upset many systems on the Disco. If the brake lights flicker while you are using the accelerator then that could certainly cause issues.

Isn’t there an issue with wiring corrosion at a connector that causes those symptoms? I’ll have to dig into the forum archives.

You could possibly have many codes stored if they've not been cleared in a while.

You are better off clearing them then waiting until it does it again before reading them, that way you'll have a better idea of what's caused the fault.

In this case I'd clear the codes, give the brake pedal a good work out then read them again in case something has popped up already.

Nasher.

Have a read of this post and links, it’s from the D3 section but there are some D4 comments

Thanks all for your help, it really is appreciated. This red wire mentioned in the thread you linked M3bobby, is this on drivers side or passenger side front for a RHD do you know?

So tonight I checked the battery and charging. 12.9V with engine off, 14.1 volts running with as many functions switched on as possible. I then removed the cowling under the steering wheel to inspect the brake pedal switch and the steering sensor. The brake pedal switch I found the plunger was hard against the pedal arm, is this right? This would be the cause of the flickering I presume as any slight movement here and the brake lights where on, should there be a small gap between end of switch plunger and pedal arm? The steering sensor had a small amount of free play on the white collar, but the yellow/green collar is sat tight.

Today I have had the codes read and the first ones that where logged was brake switch a circuit and brake switch a/b correlation. The wrest where all invalid data received to various modules - presumably due to power loss through brake switch? Can anyone confirm the brake switch set up as I am still unsure as to whether the switch should permanently be in contact with the pedal arm...I have also pulled the carpet and trim up and checked the wiring under the drivers side sill - all looks dry and really good. Will check passenger side too but otherwise got a new switch coming tomorrow. Was dead surprised the the local Land Rover dealership didn’t have any in stock and would have to special order one for me, I understood they where fairly common!
