Disco 4 and LED trailer lights - permanent solution fitted t

There's a fair bit of discussion about D3's and LED trailer lights when searching but much of it out of date as the D3 came about in the infancy of LED trailer lights, and more importantly the D4's interaction with the LED trailer lights differs. I've found little discussion regarding LED trailer lights and D4's on here though.

The benefit of the vehicle knowing when a trailer is connected is that it turns the reverse parking sensors off, the automatic transmissions shift patterns are adjusted for towing and the trailer light on the dash illuminates with the side indicators showing that the trailer lights are working.

One solution is the fitment of resistors to the trailer wiring so that the vehicle realises. Fine if only you tow that trailer and your only towing that trailer. Not necessarily great when others regularly use that trailer or you use multiple trailers requiring them all to be modified - especially undesirable when borrowing others trailers etc.

Anyone aware of any solutions that can be permanently fitted to the D4 vehicle?

I've just seen that Redarc have this ADVANCED TRAILER LIGHTING INTERFACE product https://www.redarc.com.au/advanced-trailer...mti-spu-12
Very little details on it on their website but I've contacted them to inquire if it would benefit the D4 with this issue.

there was a recent thread on this and somebody offered up another australian alternative thats been around for a while - Like most things Redarc they seem to have taken someone else's idea, put a posh box on it and doubled the price

I'm not sure that redarc box is doing to do what you want/expect.

Maybe you meant this. But it fits to the trailer!

Duc750 - any ideas where I find that thread? Hasn't come up in my searching?

Pete - what is your interpretation of what the Redarc ADVANCED TRAILER LIGHTING INTERFACE device https://www.redarc.com.au/advanced-trailer...mti-spu-12 is for then?

The first paragraph makes me think it's on the money:

Quote:
The REDARC Advanced Trailer Lighting Interface module is designed to allow late model vehicles to tow a trailer with either LED lamps or incandescent globes, where the vehicle lighting system has complex detection operations such as late model European vehicles, particularly Audi, Jaguar, VW, BMW and Mercedes.

However, rereading it now, the second paragraph makes me think that with it installed the LED lights will work fine, BUT the vehicle won't sense the trailers there (emphasis added on what leads me to this conclusion):

Quote:
It senses the vehicle lighting signals without loading the vehicle lighting circuit or control module. The Advanced Trailer Lighting Interface draws the power for the trailer lighting directly from the vehicle battery and switches it to the trailer light circuit based on the input signals received.

I would imagine that the vehicles lighting circuit or control module needs to be loaded up in order for it to know a trailer is fitted and make the changes?[/u]

no idea where the thread is but here's the bit of kit

i guess if you stuck "linearelectronicdesign" into the search bar it would probably come up but the bulk of the thread lead to that link anyway

Ah yeah, thanks. Have seen that one. Sadly it's a on the trailer solution rather than a vehicle based solution - doesn't help with hire or borrowed trailers as the box should be hard fitted to the metal of the trailer to assist with heat dispersion from the resistors.

And so they do - thank you.

https://www.linearelectronicdesign.com/buy-now.html

Then scroll down to Discovery 4/5 and for the Vehicle Plug and Trailer Plug options select "In-Car Mount With Switch".

yeah I need to drop them a line in the new year as the trailer based option is probably the easiest for me but the vehicle based option is probably the right one for me. - its just so bloody cramped in that area with rear aircon

I've just shot them an e-mail to clarify that it is what I want.

Our two MY12 D4's are the bottom spec 2.76 TDV6 so no rear aircon to get in the way!

Well if you wouldn't mind sharing what they say, that would be great.

Not the first time you’ve asked a very similar question here twr7cx. https://disco4.com/forum/d4-led-trailer-li...86769.html with my solution there as well.

That is just a ‘D3 relays and resistors’ box, it is also stupidly expensive.
