Anybody ever considered any of the Jeep vehicles as an alternative to the extinct D4 Disco ?

A jeep is not an alternative to a disco.

The disco 5 follows on from the disco 4 anyway.

Professorpool. People keep referring to the Disco 5 as the follow on from the Disco 4, it is nothing like the Disco 4.
I can't see me, or anybody else for that matter, putting four Labradors in the 5 or in some cases a couple of Fallow Bucks or even a calf.
It certainly does not have the boot space of the 4 so I don't get the idea that it is an upgrade/follow on from the 4.
I have recently read a few articles about the Jeep and some of the models have all the bells and whistles of the Discovery 4 and the height and space in the boot. It is also of a comparable price to the 'old' Disco 4 whereas the D5 is a complete new price range aimed at the better off, based on my level of income anyway.

Well JLR would, who manufactured the 4 and now manufacture the 5, would certainly disagree with you.

BEST-IN-CLASS CAPABILITY

All-New Land Rover Discovery not only looks truly at home in the city, but also drives impeccably off-road. It takes towing capability to a new level, with a capacity of up to 3.500kg and a suite of features available to help make towing effortless and assured. Whilst its optimised geometry coupled with unique Land Rover technologies ensure it delivers class-leading all-terrain capabilities.

I have owned only one jeep, a grand cherokee on a P plate. It was a "dirty" car I used for laning and towing a boat. I would characterise its boot as awful.

There are no alternatives to a JLR vehicle, simply compromises Wink

I checked on my calendar but I was right - it is a bit early for an April fool.

I have had four Disco's and have attended the D5 launch and am now driving a D5 courtesy car and I can assure you that the D5 is not the workhorse that the D4 is/was.
The new range of Jeeps is nothing like your old P reg Jeep.
From what I have seen of the D5 I reckon it was aimed at the farmers wives or retired farmers or city boys.

Well I have only owned three Discoverys so I guess my opinion is worth less.

Your comment re the D5 sounds remarkably similar to the sort of thing you would hear a defender owner saying about a discovery owner Wink

If you want to compromise with a cheaper alternative then the best of luck to you! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

As great as the D5 is, I also don't see it as a replacement for the D4, for my needs anyway. I do however accept that for many, probably the vast majority, the D5 will be seen as an superior replacement.

I want a more utilitarian and practical package. My2006 HSE was just the perfect halfway house between a Defender and FFRR for me. With seat covers, hatch bag and a full set of rubber mats, the D4 is nearly as utilitarian, but I miss the extra storage space and simplistic switch gear of the D3 (designed to be easy to operate whilst wearing gloves).

Most of all though, I'd really, really miss the split tail gate. Sad

I love my D3, for similar reasons.

Still can't come on a D3/D4 forum and asks about alternatives with a straight face mind - even if I was in the market for one anyway.... Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Yes, I have considered a Jeep. The lastest Grand Cherokee has a huge specification, will be more than sufficient off road for most people. A demo or nearly new one is a bit of a bargain. Not a 7 seater though, unless that's an option I didn't pick up on.

A friend has one, he's had lots of Jeeps over the years. He bought a 6 month old one a year ago. It had been a Jeep company car, fully loaded and so far never missed a beat.

Whilst not a direct competitor to the D5, it's certainly an alternative for those who don't want to spend so much and don't need the extra seats etc.

I sat in both the D4 and the Grand Cherokee, two Sunday's ago. As both JLR, Jeep and also Subaru had displays at the point to point we were at. I actually found the Jeep a bit more comfortable to sit in. I'm not "normal" sized though, so that's not really relevant. Laughing

I've looked around for a replacement within the next two years and feel the D5 will really be the only choice for this city boy. Jeeps have dreadful value retention and just don't do it for me. A personal choice thing but the seating position is far more laying down than a Disco. Nothing else comes close to a 3/4 so I think I'll give a 5 a chance. Russell who has a 5 already seems pretty smitten with his and as stated, the prowess of a 4 isn't required for 90% of the owners. Just have to wait for them to lose a bit of value first.
FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!
D4 HSE 2012 Like a second wife, more expensive but goes better! I almost cried this time!
D3 HSE 2006 (Almost 8 years together, true love)
Land Cruiser VX 1994 11 years together, wife cried when I p/ex'd for my D3

Yeah, it's the awful residuals on Jeep that makes them such a used or nearly new bargain. Particularly if you then intend to keep it for a while.

For me there simply isn't a direct replacement for the D4, I'll be making compromises if I get anything else. Sad

I looked into Jeep sometime back instead of D4 and as said above the residuals were dire.

I also found the black headlining that comes as standard makes it feel very claustrophobic, like driving a coffin Sad

Have heard several reports that fuel economy on them is dire too, low 20's at best.

At the time the Stat nav would not let you use postcode for navigation.

The latest GK really isn't that bad at all inside. I can't remember for sure, but I don't think the headlining was black in the one I sat in.

It's not comparable to the quality of the D5 interior, but then it's a lot cheaper.

Thanks for feedback all - apologies for delayed response have been sidetracked of late!

Caravan has MTPLM of 1800kg which will possibly rule out a lot of estates, but the main reason which rules them out is the lack of three proper (equal sized) seats in the back. With three teenagers (twin 16yr old boys and 14 yr old daughter) three seats is a must - no compromise.

I had been considering the jeep, but increasingly looking like there is no alternative to current D4
