I was very privileged to be one of a small group invited to JLR in the very early days of the D3... We were taken to their testing grounds and shown what they could do... In the words of the ex military instructor ' you need to know what they can do if they are stolen.... Jesus H Christ....5 up he was trying to turn it over....then he was rally drifting it....then we went upto the windscreen in water!
Stunning the punishment it took and this was a mule car ....amazing not one squeak from the chassis or trim..... Hence it was after this test I went out and bought my brace of Disco's
Never looked back since!

In case it is of interest to you... there are two types of development testing that are often (and incorrectly) thought of together: 'abuse' and 'durability'.
Durability testing checks that the vehicle (systems, components etc) last 'long enough' based on normal driving (there's a more complex description involving lots of statistics but that'll do for now!). This will tend to be many, many repeats of lower level inputs. Durability testing at vehicle level will probably squeeze 100,000km - 200,000km of equivalent miles into just 6-10 weeks of driving.
Abuse testing checks that the vehicle (systems, components etc) strength is adequate for low occurence / high impact inputs. Pass criteria may be no failure at a certain level of input but, equally, it may require a safe failure. For example, if you have a high input kerb strike it may be considered safer and more repairable for a weak link in the suspension to fail (indicating a clear failure to the driver and protecting inputs being passed through to damage chassis/body), than for components to be weakened to the point where it may fail with no warning at a later point (wheel falling off at autobahn speeds anybody?).
The video shows fairly classic abuse testing but, given that the normal operating range of LR's is already outside that of 'normal' cars, it is certainly 'extreme' by anyone's measure!
Even normal abuse (and durability) testing is punishing on both the vehicle and the driver so this is not something I'd fancy getting involved in - my back wouldn't take it for long!

Does look like Gaydon! I remember our guide there showing us where they do these tests! I think we watched one or two of them tests going on, was very impressive to see what facilities they have there 2009 Discovery 3 HSE - Gone
