Disco died - no compression and coolant leak |
|
Hi,
Recently I was driving on the highway about an hour long with speed around 150km/h.
Suddenly i realised that i have no power, when i put the throttle RPMs jumped up only because of gear reduction(automatic)
I switched to N turned off car with key, then tried to start it again but i couldnt.
Then i pulled over.
When i try to start up the engine it sounds like there is no compression.
Car also have losted all coolant due to rubber pipe gone disconnected with water cooler..
There was no symptoms before, no signs no warnings.
I didnt see engine overheat nothing.
There are shreads of metal in oil.
I have to add that i have changed water cooler 2 days before, but ive been driving since then.
Any ideas what happened?
Please give me Your thoughts so i can put that storry together:)

Sounds like you have spun a shell or worse, unfortunately metal in oil very bad news i'm afraid.

could be head gasket ? but the metal in the oil suggests it's worse I'm afraid.
if the coolant loss is sudden and drastic, there is nothing for the sensor to sense … so it doesn't know it's overheated.

I wonder if the two pertinent lines are above?
Perhaps the pipe wasn't fastened correctly and took a bit of a while to work it's way off? or something was weakened when it was moved, and subsequently let go?
At 150kph, a sudden catastrophic loss of water will very quickly result in metal in the oil I'm afraid.
I hope I am wrong but I suspect that your engine is toast

Well im looking for answer why i have two diferent results:
On one hand i've losted water and i toasted engine (even if for me its wierd - ive been running bmw tds for few months it was boiling water throwing it up and when it was overheated it stopped engine before toast)
And on second hand i dont have compression just like i'd lost timing belt or sth....
If any ideas what to check first let me know.
Ill let You know when i do my investigation
For now im looking for new engine:)

Major overheat could have melted the piston rings into their grooves hence the no compression
Add the lack of compression and the metal in the oil and it sounds likes the engine is scrap.
You could spend hours and lots of money trying to fix it, or just buy a replecement lump.

Well finally i have my disco back at my house.
Ive checked wheather there are some metal shreds when i drain oil and there are no metal pieces in oil.
What i think now is that head gasket failed so that pressure from cylinder blown cooling system so quickly that water drained rapidly out. Thats why i didnt have no signals that its overheated because there were no water at the water temp. Sensor.
I dont even have no errors when i connect simple diagnostic tool.
For now i need to chech wheather there is compression or not and if not then is it leaking to oil through pistons or through head gasket to water ??
Any hints? Please let me know:)

Don’t get your hopes up.
A head gasket failure will not cause the engine to loose all compression.
Check the cam belt tension
