Yes, PHEV. Not initially what we were looking to replace the Disco with but it's very nice and a lot cheaper to run!

I just changed my alternator, after Flack noticed a burning electrical stink coming from the engine. If I had left it any longer I think it would have cooked itself. All good now with new genny and belt. The genny (original 9 year old Denso) was showing signs of excessive heat. Always a good idea to have the fire ext to hand.

Update

Well, not much of an update really. Still waiting for LR to provide a replcaement loom as it's been on back order since December. I've complained to the insurers but as they have authourised repair I just have to wait.

Garage have confirmed fire started at the back of the alternator. Until the body is off though they won't know how much further damage there is. They have told me that they quoted high for the repair and were surprised the insurers gave the go ahead.

Loom due here over the weekend so hopefully work will start then and I will know where I stand.

This and Prof's D3 fire route cause alternator in both cases. I was thinking of fitting a dash mounted Voltmeter to health check what it normally runs at then any variation in this further investigation. I realize there would be a slight difference in no running voltage. Anyone think of reasons why this would not monitor the health of alternator?

No, Conrad Omand's. Taits, whilst previously a LR agent, haven't been for a number of years and don't fill me with the confidence they should. Having seen on an invoice that the previous owner supplied that it took 7 hours to change an EGR along with a few other issues, I felt Conrad was best. The insurers agreed with me.

Not sure. It would likely give an idication if something was going wrong. We had no warning and I'm not sure a volt meter would have helped, although may have given a better indication of charging system health before the fire. The fire was noticed by SWMBO whilst she was in the car with the engine stopped. I assume it started before stopping the engine.

Loom has arrived and work due to start over the weekend. Not sure if any more damage will be found when body is off but should know by Monday. MOT ran out last week so will get that done at the same time as well as new disks/pads and wheel bearing I'd planned to fit last year! Shocked

So this time next week, I'll either have a Discovery for sale with new loom, alternator, brakes, wheel bearing and 12 months MOT OR a written off Discovery with some sort of settlement from the insurers.

Will keep you all posted!

Further update from the garage.

Car has been fired up and running but a whole load of faults now showing. EGR loom melted and throwing up faults and there are other melted plugs etc too.

Then there's corrosion. The front crossmember is Censored apparently so will need replaced at my cost once the body is off (can't blame that on the fire) and one of the bolts holding the body to the chassis has seized.

Garage is submitting an updated quote to the insurer so will have to wait and see what happens next Big Cry

Just had the insurance on today with an offer to write the car off. I'd requested this as it's dragged on far to long.

First offer was £2750 but was quickly upped to £3000. Must say I'm pretty disappointed with this and had hoped for a bit higher. I've not accepted yet.

If it were me in your position I’d be digging my heels in and telling them to fCensoredk off especially knowing you have a new car, tell them to poke there 3 grand double the offer or fix the car and you should end up at a respectable 4-4.5k, at the end of the day you are gonna be paying an increased premium for the next 5 years for 3k, there’s no way the insurance co would have considered repairing the car at 3k value especially with the garage over estimating the job in the first place, make it a principal thing don’t give up to easy Thumbs Up

I don't think you can be considered a real Land Rover enthusiast until you have burned one out

On a brighter note, I got a very very good pay out from the insurance company and I was able to buy a newer vehicle with 85,000 less miles for the insurance payout + £500 Thumbs Up

See what they will offer as "cash in lieu of repairs" then sell car as "spares or repair" . Or do a DSL and sell it on here bit by bit.

I did consider stripping her but to be honest I don't have the time!

Insurance called me back yesterday and I explained that I would be better off pushing with the repair and getting my money back from selling. In the end the offer was upped a reasonable amount so we have agreed to settle and write the car off. Quite sad but at least I can move on. Just need to recover the parts that I'd asked the garage to fit whilst carrying out the repair (and also find a scrap set of wheels to swap with the Disco 4 ones currently fitted!), so I may have a few parts to sell yet!

Interestingly SWMBO gpt a letter from the insurer a couple of weeks ago saying that claims due to fire would not result in any loss of no claims. She is trying to clarify if that applies to us given the incident occured before the letter.
