Disco just gone on fire!

I'm sure cars must know if they're being replaced. With about a week to go before my new car arrives, my venerable old Disco has decided to go on fire!!! Evil or Very Mad

Now stuck in Kirkwall with a wet dog waiting for recovery!!

Not too big thankfully but scary none the less! Looks like the alternator. No external damage to the car but no idea on what damage in the engine bay!

was it a genuine Denso alternator, or a pattern part?

Hope it's just the alternator then.

Hopefully. Car has been recovered to local garage and now have the insurers on the case. I suspect given the size of flames the damage may be deeper, although who knows. Bodywork all okay and an initial glance from under the bonnet doesn't reveal much damage.

Thanks for the comments! SWMBO was with me too but was picked up by my MIL to steal my sons car from his work so we had a set of wheels!

Just been to collect the replacement hire car (a 1 litre Peugeot 208 with no go!!) And then collect all or stuff out of the Discovery (sale thread will appear soon Laughing ). Garage think it will be a write off Crying or Very sad but will find out for sure next week.

Intend to buy fire extinguishers for our other cars now!

Russel will confirm (or not) but ISTR it's well dangerous to open the bonnet if there is a fire under there, it fans the fire and goes woooooooosh.

But I may be wrong. It has been known. It was a Monday, and it was raining. Laughing

And good Mrs OD was all good as well. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

My Landcruiser Amazon alternator caught fire.
Quite big flames but I got the extinguisher in pretty quick.

Changed alternator and had no further problems...other than removing all the dry powder from the engine bay.

I think you're right. I waited until I had an extinguisher in hand before popping the bonnet for that reason.

Highlands, I did suggest this to the garage but they weren't too sure that there wasn't any more damage. The problem is, I'm not sure what actually caused the fire Confused

I didn't have an extinguisher in the Amazon but luckily it was sat next to my Jag XJR which had an extinguisher fitted in the boot.
It normally takes around 30 minutes for a fire engine call-out to here so without extinguishers I'd basically be resigned to letting anything burn out/down.

Since the alternator fire we have around 10 extinguishers between the house/garage/cars.

Well, just heard back from the insurers and they are pressing ahead with a repair (replace alternator, a couple of wiring looms and a couple of hoses and other components that melted) Shocked .

Not sure how I feel about that as they still don't know the cause of the fire. SWMBO not keen on driving it again and she already has her replacement Outlander (ordered before the fire).

Still waiting on a timescale for repair (currently on temporary insurance cover for the Outlander as the Disco policy was going to be transferred over) but don't expect much progress before the new year Big Cry
