Disco had a TIA on the Motorway |
|
Last night traveling on the motorway my D4 threw a wobbler for a few seconds then seemed to recover.
All warning lights came on, I think maybe the headlights flickered, then the display in the middle of the instrument cluster "rebooted", telling me that the Tyre Pressures set to high load etc....
I don't think engine or transmission were affected, but may be wrong. It all lasted a few seconds, we slowed down but that was me lifting off the gas.
Having had the classic "engine fault/limp mode" issues countless times on my old D3, this all felt sickeningly familiar and I was fully expecting to be dumped at the side of the road to await recovery or limp home.
However, after its TIA, the car recovered gracefully and within seconds and was completely fine for the 100+ miles home.
Any ideas of what could trigger such an episode ? (I will see if I can get the fault codes read off it to see if anything is reported).
My wife is on the war-path. After the shenanigans we had with the D3, she's currently looking at new cars !!! Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

I feel for you... .. but at the same time I am very happy that I still have my 2006 D3 which is faultless
for many years. Biggest issue ever were the contact points of the alternator..
OK. I serviced it at 300.00Km for € 6500 , last year. But this year service, including all new filters even
new petrol filter.. € 650 ...
On ebay my car is worth € 6500 looking at the sorry misfits they offer there, after years of neglect and bad garages..
This pulls the value of my car down. So I'm not selling ; depreciation of a new one is around € 15.000 to € 20.000 per year.
I drive for free..

Had similar unexplained blip with the first D4 … about 6 miles into a trip to southern Italy ! Pulled up at services on M6, switched off for 3 mins then restarted. Never repeated.
I always wondered if it was something in the fuel … but in truth no idea what caused it.

Funny you should mention your headlights..
I popped out last night and I'm sure my headlights flickered.. No warning lights though..
The more I think about it the more I think it was my mind playing tricks.. but I'm 70% sure they flickered..
Hope it was a blip and all is well from now on..

Thanks all. Wife confirmed that the headlights definitely turned off although not the satnav screen.
It was almost like the ignition was turned off/on momentarily.
The car has been ok since, but by my experience from my D3 suggests that it will return at some point, most likely at night with a car full of kids on a french motorway ! Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

My D3 was like that for about 5 years, then became expensively unreliable - I've lost track of how many journeys finished on a low-loader .... Didn't put me off getting another one though Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

This is typical of a poor/loose earth wire, check the body to engine earth connections are good as well as battery terminals, there have also been reports of the main cable rubbing on the engine block underneath and causing a short. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

ThatMartinChap - There were other random symptoms but I can't remember what they were now. I seem to remember a few warnings popping up on the dash.
The battery turned out to be absolutely shot. The Independant (Normans) was surprised that it even turned over the engine. Current - 2016 Commercial SE
