I dont know if you will have any problems with the inner face of the tyre rubbing on the suspension., Ive never used that size or read any experiences here.If you try this tyre calculator it will let you compare the normal OEM stock tyre size in comparison to the tyre you suggest.Stock tyre is 235/70/17.Looks fine.

I've got some 17" Cooper STT's coming. Andy at AJS recommended 245 but not 255. You may want to speak to him for advice (and purchase as he is a site sponsor... ) The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

I've got a set of Goodrich BFG AT in 265 / 70 R17 - I've had no problems with rubbing the wheel arches and they seem OK off-road.
Mine's an 05 model - the later ones may have problems so check
SB
PS - the spare has to live in the boot unless you deflate it. My road tyres are Wranglers on 19" rims and the 17" combo are about 1.5 / 2 inches bigger (I've not measured them exactly) I see no ships........
