Disconnect Battery when charging?

Hi,

My alternator is dying. Until I get chance to swap it is it OK to connect a 'smart' charger without disconnecting the battery from the car?

The charger is one of the electronic ones bought recently from Aldi.

Thanks for any replies.

Adri

Others with more knowledge will be along shortly.

I would say disconnect the battery & don't use the car until the alternator is replaced, as you risk Censored the battery.

A new alternator can be purchased from forum sponsors Advanced Factors:-

No need to disconnect the battery imo....but if the alternator isn't charging it you won't get very far, or won't be able to restart once you do get there.....(and you might knacker the battery)

You don't need to disconnect the battery to charge it, but you really should if the alternator has failed. These have been known to start fires when the alternator fails. Shocked

If the alternator is failing, then disconnect it when charging because they are known to combust when they fail, so just as a safe guard until you fit a new one.

As said above, also a failing alternator can have a ruinous affect on other electronic components as was recently discovered by another member on here. If you suspect its faulty don't drive it until replaced, or diagnosed properly GAP IID et al:thumbsup:
