Right then - here we are. I went for a play this morning to Buxton, here's what I did on the way.

Great fun, the kids have never seen snow this deep before, some of the drifts were 12 feet plus!

First 4x4 expedition

Took the family up into the hills for a play...nearly got stuck too Very Happy . One lane had a stuck defender & Disco2....we got about half way and chickened out. I wasn't sure whether to use snow or mud/rutts setting at that point but managed to reverse out on the snow one. I resisted a photo as we had too many spectators Embarassed .

We headed over to The Lake District this weekend and as normal used the Alston to Penrith road (A686). The road was blocked at Hartside Cafe and 2 snow blowers and a plough were working hard to clear it. A Mitsubishi Warrior was well stuck in a snow drift, having been there since thursday. 2 people were trying to recover it with no success. I carry an 8m long heavy duty recovery strap with hooks at either end so volunteered to help.

I was doubtful whether we would be able to recover the Misubishi as its front wheels were very deeply embedded in the snow, off the side of where I reckoned the road to be, and there was no snow free area to tow from. The driver had apparently been up there on Thursday in a whiteout and had not seen a big bank of snow before he hit it. He said he didn't feel too bad as there was also a snow plough stuck at the same time.

Anyway, we hooked on and I was amazed at how well the Disco 3 found traction on a snow covered surface to pull the Mitsubishi out of the drift and then clear accross to a relatively shallow snow area. Undoubtedly the Disco's great weight helped enormously as I was towing slightly down hill.

Just as we had tidyed the recovery strap away, the first snow blower broke through the drifts (at least 8 feet deep for probably 75 yards). I asked the driver if he would allow us to proceed down the channel he had just cut (which still had a good 6 inches of snow in it) and he said OK (with lots of "but not my fault if you come to grief" type disclaimers). Anyway the Disco did a great job, sailed through the snow with a certainty and a solidity that was truly heart warming. We were therefore the first vehicle through from Alston to Penrith in 3 days.

Got to love this motor ..... !

A great story. I went to the lakes a few weeks back with the family and the D3 certainly did feel at home. Makes my pensive treck onto a snowy lane sound very underwhelming Very Happy . I did come face to face with the snow plough rollers though and had to make a swift downhill reverse manoevre, the family were very impressed Laughing .
