if you have a 06 onwards you can reset using the tripmeter button on the clock console , i think you hold in button while turning on ignition and keep pressed for 10 seconds this enters reset mode, Any model pre 06 needs diagnostic tool.

No - it's later than MY06 - I'm sure it's MY08 onwards that you can reset via the instrument pack buttons....
Earlier ones need it doing diagnostically. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

The land rover service tool does defo say 06 onwards , I have reset reminders on 06 models easy but mine is a 55plate and i have to plug in to diagnostic. Dont know what the difference is but hayho.
Remember the number plate does not give the vehicle year was, looking at a disco 3 the other day reg 08 and manafactured in 06 ( worth looking at i thinK its the 10th digit of the chassis number gives manafacturer date?)
The snap on tool resets easily

I was thinking of buying a faultmate, does anyone know if these reset the service indicator as well as read codes?

Yes, the Faultmate resets the Service Warning and you can also set when you want your next reminder
