Well been up North(Northumberland). Up and back via North Yorkshire. Took the LR as I thought the weather would be bad and didn't fancy taking our VW T5

1051miles in a week. V8 hasn't missed a beat but enjoyed a drink. 21.7mpg which is probably nearer 20.5mpg for the whole journey. Hills, snow and traffic, not a great combination for the V8. I've done the trip a few times in numerous vehicles and the LR has been the most comfortable by far.

First mechanical in 8000miles. Front n/s wheel bearing now noisy.

Hear, hear! Thumbs Up

Does anyone have an opinion on what the expected lifetime of the water pump or the alternator would be - km or years? My understanding is that one shouldn’t wait for either to fail but how does one figure out when they start to go bad?

I’ve now got approximately 198500 km on the vehicle. I had both auxiliary drive belts done along with updated tension pulley and idlers - a bit in advance based on age rather than distance . Also replaced the PCV valve and spark plugs at the same time. One of the belts was a bit iffy looking, the other was all right.

In the engine bay I was planning on replacing the thermostat + housing + hoses + hose clamps soon. It looked like they’re all originals. The clamps seem to somehow have rusted. I’ll change the T-piece at the same time.

Other than that the car is in great shape and a pleasure to drive. I’m getting it inspected in a month or so. Thumbs Up

No idea sorry. I am going to get my belts and plugs done at this year's service. I'll be around 137,000 miles by then.

I don't think there's much sense in replacing the thermostat or housing until it fails. But they do fail. My 2006 with 78k on it has given me a few problems in the past 6 months with the cooling system. First the thermostat housing developed a small leak, which was an easy fix (with new thermostat). They eventually the main assembly sprang a leak and I replaced that also. My advice: as soon as you get any leaks in this space, don't mess around with replacing the thermostat housing ($40 part), just replace the whole assembly ($140).

I haven't done my plugs yet, but the engine runs fine so I'm happy. I will look at belts when the weather warms up. Looks like a pretty easy job.

Just replaced the keys over christmas with new ones from eBay at $16 each. I know they're not as good as the originals (in that the battery doesn't recharge) but having faffed around soldering in new batteries to the original circuitry, I'll take the $16 approach every time. The IID tool pairing process is a breeze.

Checked this - the water pump is a fairly simple construction and should last a very long time. One LR mechanic said it should last well over 300000 km. The dude said he hasn’t seen very many fail.

Also said that rubber coolant hoses are usually changed around ~10 years along with the coolant itself. Suggested that the thermostat assembly to be changed as well since the plastic tends become weaker with age.

While I’m not a great fan on the newer style LED rears (black surround), they do look good next to silver.

Mine is the only (1/30) cairns blue V8 in the country. Thumbs Up

I like the orange/blue contrast and was not planning on “upgrading” to clear turn signals. Perhaps older style LED rear lights but need to model first how it would look.

Sorry - no such plans in the near future. I’ve recently gotten it shipshape and plan to make a few modifications to it in the coming spring. Thumbs Up
