Discovery 3 wheel studs




Good afternoon everyone!

Here's to hoping there some help out there;

I've got a Disco' 3 that I'm converting/upgrading for Overlanding.

I've purchased new Wolfrace Sahara Explorer 8.5 x 18 alloy Rims - just tried one of the new

wheels on & the studs are too short.

Are extended studs available & can they be installed (new wheel bearings front & rear are to be installed when the car goes in for modifying in a couple of weeks time).

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice.

PS: Ive not spoken to Wolfrace yet.

Silly question, what makes you think they’re too short? Looking at the picture of the two studs, the red line is about where he bolt comes up to when done up, so looks about right?



What’s stopping the original studs going on?

Thanks for your reply.

With the existing wheel nut, the shank (left of your red line) (which is internally threaded) goes through the alloy and its the face of the washer that tightens/presses up against the alloy wheel.

The new nuts sent by Wolfrace with the wheels by dont do this, they just appear to tighten up against the tapered face and as can be seen in the photos, the stud only threads into the nut by just over a 1/3rd - looks like I'm probably going to require longer studs..???

Anyone know what the press in stud shank diameter is..??

I’ve not heard of anyone having to fit longer studs. Wolfrace have produced a wheel that cannot be fitted straight on, safely, I would not modify anything, just return them for a refund. Whistle
 D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Let us know the outcome of this, others may want to try it also, or not, as the case may be.

So i spoke with Wolfrace this morning & to be fair to them so far they have been very helpful. They advised that as long as 7 complete turns of the wheel nut was achieved this would be enough - the jury is out on this one on the moment.

Anyway, i popped round to the garage & grabbed an old wheel hub out of their skip so i could do some more checks.

It turns out the centre hole in the rim is 73mm diameter & the start of the hub shaft is also 73mm - however it then tapers out to 84mm, thus preventing the inside of the wheel butting up to the face of the hub by around 10mm.

Ive sent the photos to Wolfrace & I'm awaiting a further response.

I have some 10mm spacers that would overcome this issue, although the wheel studs would have to be longer. I have taken out a stud & found that a Grayston SS44 wheel stud should fit (M14 x 1.5mm with 15mm diameter spline 70mm long), so i have ordered one to give it a try.

Is that a Disco 3 hub ? I would of thought the best thing would be for them to machine the rim centre correctly to accept the hub properly, and then make sure the nuts go on the studs sufficiently. Something that should have been done already, if they are meant to fit a D3 Rolling Eyes

My daft! Forgot about the brake disc fitting between the hub & the rim Lol!

So just off to get a brake disc & then see if the wheel nut will go on 7 turns - Wolfrace have come back to me & say that's all it needs, but as can be seen from the very first photos i posted I'm far from convinced this is enough - just doesn't seem right to me Question

Im off to the Western Sahara, so i need to be sure these are going to be ok;

Yeh, these are rated at 1250kg per wheel which is why i went for this particular rim.

Ps: Done the test with the disc in situ - just under 6 turns of the wheel nut - so waiting to here back from Wolfrace now

If you look at the image of the wheel nut there is no thread in the part of the nut that isnt used so there would be no benefit in fitting longer studs

I was always told you need 1.5 times the diameter of the stud protruding for proper nut to stud engagement with tapered nuts and have always made sure to play it on the safe side by making sure the studs are at least flush with the top of the nuts (open ended type).

You mentioned that 7 full turns was suggested by the manufacturer and just checking the thread pitch for m14 studs is 2mm. On that basis 7 full turns is 14mm of thread engagement, working on the theory of 1.5 times the thread diameter you really need 21mm of thread.

You said you could only get about 6 turns which works out at 12mm of thread/stud engagement so you need 10mm longer studs to get the 1.5 times stud engagement if you want to run with that theory.

That said you would only need +2mm-ish longer studs to meet the manufacturers requirements but I’m pretty sure studs only come in 10mm increments!

Double check the numbers but that should give you a good steer!

Thanks to everyone for your input & comments!

To answer all your points raised;

1) Due to all the modifications being done I will be obtaining specialist insurance with all the modifications listed - as we know, insurance companies will try & riddle out of liability for the slightest of indiscretions.

2) The supplied wheel nuts are threaded all the way through (appreciate first photos don't show it so I've added a couple more).

Wolfrace have said to send the wheels back (they will collect) & they will machine 5mm off the inside - Im not too sure about this due to the resulting offset, plus Ive already had the tyres fitted (my bad) & lobbed all the packaging.

So at the moment I am going down the route of longer studs, (Wolfrace have said they will reimburse the cost) if i can get some that fit - as mentioned Ive ordered one to try, so I'll let you all know how it goes;

I would like to say, that whilst there is this problem with the wheels, Wolfrace (so far) have been excellent in trying to resolve the problem.
