the air suspension on the vw will give you 30cm clearance underneath but at the cost of being very stiff so you bounce over difficult terrain and lose traction with wheels in the air rather than the discos smooth easy approach albeit with the occasional scrape or grounding (solved by extended and super extended modes in emergencies) There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Doesn't the air suspension on the VW have the ability to tune the shocks? Maybe that was another inprovement Stuttgart made. The Cayenne's with air suspension can also alter the shocks to soften the ride.

Thanks a lot to everybody for the replies and comments, really useful, and not as biased as I expected them to be 
Per my choice, as I have no kids (a future wife and a dog though), the 7 seater option is not that important to me, as well as the great cargo space that comes with the LR4. Furthermore, it is still not confirmed whether the Treg will have a 7-seat option or not - rumor has it that it will.
The important points for me were: The car should have good off-road capabilities, but possibly not to the extent that many of you use it. The weight/power ratio is important, and so is reliability. I have always been envious of Subaru owners who only stop by the repair shop only for the regular maintenance intervals - I think all cars should be like that when we all are paying through the nose.
So comparing a few key figures: LR4 vs TReg
HP 245 / 240
Torque 600 / 550
Weight-kg 2586 / 2174
Fuel Cons. 9.3 / 7.4
0-100km. 9.6 / 7.8
Gears 6 / 8
HP/kg*100 9.5 / 11
Torque/kg*100 23.2 / 25.3
I think the numbers speak for themselves. Looks etc all else is very personal and subjective, so no comparisons there. The key point then becomes - how off-road capable is the new terrain pack on the TReg ? (you can order air suspension w/the terrain pack on the treg) I drove the Disco 3, and thought the terrain response system worked like a dream. Yet the car felt heavy for the 190HP it had. Of course the new 245HP should feel much different.
One caveat here though - the above figures are for the TReg without the full terrain system. When you choose the terrain option+air suspension, of course it might get a little heavier, hence changing a lot of the figures above.

its not the damping factor of the shocks but the amount of remaining travel in the system when fully raised  There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

This is like asking in a porsche forum, "should I get a ferrari".... 
Just buy a D4, it's really a totally different car and class of cars. The VW is designed to be a street car on high legs, the D4 is a real jeep. 2015 Discovery SDV6 HSE Fuji White with Black pack

Koen has two fair points and in the order of fairness, I will go bug a Touareg forum with a similar question

The off-road part for the RRS is undisputed, but on the road the new Treg beats the RRS in many key specs.
So to sum up before this topic slowly drifts to the bottom of the sea, the choice is affected by:
1. Off road capabilities and the need of the driver thereof
2. Pricing on the new Treg
3. Whether the Disco is living its last two years as a model - if it's going to be dropped as discussed in another topic, this sure will put downward pressure on the secondary market price of the Disco 4, and potentially parts availability.

1. Off-road, the Disco will probably beat the Touareg even without inflated tires 
2. Can't comment on that....
3. Didn't follow that one yet, would be nice, because we then have an even more exclusive car 8)

sorry DG,, put that badlly,,, ,,, the treg has had a very nice 3.0L for a long time now,,the LR only just got a nice 3.0L a la jaguar.

No really it is the 19" Rims take MTR's as well
That said the Cayanne is not that bad either
My new X5 on the other hand is pants off Road but then I have a Defner & D3 for that

As mentioned earlier there is a "My Treg" forum on which you can get an equally unbiased opinion.
VW are famed for reliability and I had a Touareg 3L diesel and it was excellent - but it was not a landrover - had it for 2 years but went back to landrover with a RRS.
It was pretty good off road with standard tyres, the only downside was limited ground clearance and for an off roader a very low air intake  - behind the bumper.
I took it through the floods in July couple of years ago and was lucky to get out without the engine.
Saying that about VW reliability it never let me down, but neither (touch wood) has any landrover(except one) I've ever had and that goes back to the earliest a 1957(671 WMH I think) series 2.
Over the last 30 years we as a family must have had at least 20 different landrover vehicles and the only one that broke down only once was a series 3 we bought from a farmer that had been standing for a couple of years and on the drive home from picking up died as a result of basically old fuel - sorted with a clean of carb and a tank of new fuel.
A VW has no soul or charachter a Land Rover has it in abundance.
