Test drove a touareg escape yesterday ... nice car .... very swift on pick up and gear box very smooth.

If the one i drove yesterday had been available i would have been pretty tempted .... but it was already sold.

going to keep my powder dry and see what MY2012 brings on the Disco4XS

Downsides of the Touareg:

1. no seven seats.
2. no terrain response
3. wing mirrors are very aerodynamic but useless to look out of.
4. Resdiuals
5. A lot of dealers don't know or understand the product.
6. it does not have a green oval on the front.

Upsides:
1. lower tax band than disco.
2. far quicker on road and more economical
3. Sat nav and ipod connections are slicker

I'm looking to replace my decent condition 2006 D3 HSE with 75K on the clock. The D4 HSE should be the obvious choice but it is a big lump of money for a car that is broadly similar. I've made several attempts at buying one, but the head always seems to rule the heart. £30K+ of hard earned and taxed dosh for some extra refinement and a warranty. There are no special LR incentives on offer at the moment either.

My Disco 3 has been pretty reliable (unlike my 300TDi and TD5) so I am loyal to the brand, but I think Land Rover need to make a "step change" for me to trade up. The VED is getting beyond a joke (£460 this year) and the 24 mpg is pathetic when compared to some other large 4X4's.

I like the look of the VW but it is not a "proper" 4X4. It does have the appeal of German reliability and lower running costs, it just needs a green oval on the front!

Anyone else feel the same? Confused

Exactly the same keep on looking at D4 XS and the extra sum to swap and it does not make a great deal of sense .. hence why i started looking at what else was out there.

Life is too short to drive something as boring as a Volkswagen.

my thoughts exactly...capability by the wagon load for the D3/4.....swiss watch reliability for the VW...+ mainly a very competant service network......ultimately the Disco is far larger inside when you put all the seats down.
I looked hard at a VW before my D3 & to get anywhere near the D3 HSE spec at that time you had to buy all sorts of options..that wouldnt be reflected in any resale value
if the Touareg had DSG it may be different...

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

NOT having the green oval on the front is a BIG bonus in my eyes.

Christ, you swallowed the whole ad campaign from the 80s hook, line and sinker didn't you. VW are no more reliable than any other make. Look on the Treg forums for evidence Thumbs Up or talk to a few dealer techs Whistle
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Hi guys.

I went through this exercise four years ago when I was looking to replace a Defender. I had a good hard look at the Toureg at the time, and while I agree with many here that it's a good car, my single biggest concern, was what to do with the 'full size flat tyre', once I had replaced it with the deflated (to be inflated) compact spare that sits under the back floorboard. Sure you can put it in the back, but what if the back is full of your holiday bags and the flat also happens to be wet and muddy - I'll tell you this much; the dealer could not answer me!!!

I'll add, that to the best of my knowledge, you can't fit a rear mounted spare-wheel carrier to the 'new' Toureg!

All in all, there can be no doubt, that every make and model has their fair share of problems. I just think Landy owners are not prepared to hide them away and protect the manufacturer like others do.

Cheers

Peter
