Re: 12v-12.3, low charging after battery replaced and BMS reset |
|
limaluk wrote:Hi. I was looking for a lot yesterday about low (12v-12.3v) battery charge in my D4 right after replacing it. Of course, I did a BMS reset using the IID Gap tool. Charging (reading from the "cigarette lighter") was normal at the beginning 14.3V what surprised me, why do I need this reset?
However, after half an hour the charging dropped and the meter showed 12V- 12.3v !! This time I was surprised and scared. After a few hours of searching (some hints but no answer in disco3 forum) I found a good article about BMS, battery, and charging on Discovery 4. It says:
“After the BMS is resetted, the BMS performs a self-calibration. To do this, the battery is first charged with maximum charge voltage while the engine is running and then discharged to 75% charge. Discharging can take several days if only short distances are driven. During this time the alternator does not switch on! Only after that the BMS works normally again and charges the battery normally again.”
I hope that it will save the nerves of a few forum members.
Thanks for this. Put new HSB019 in. Like yours it initially showed similar (14.7). Checked on Gap which said 83%. Sat with car running for a bit and it rose to 85%. Went for a short drive (to drop the old battery off) and back home, checked again and was 80% and 12.3v! So fingers crossed this is indeed normal behaviour. I'll expect it to drop to 75% as you mentioned then. After that, will it go to 100% or is this some battery life extending setting that keeps it at 75%?
Thanks

I'm glad I found this thread. I too have put a new HSB019 battery in today, BMS reset, initially it started charging at 14.7v (reading the cigarette lighter gadget). Later, when picking my son up, it was 12.3-12.4v and it worried me that the alternator had decided to pack up. Thankfully after reading this I'm a little more assured that its the BMS doing its calibration.

As far as I am aware the first of the D4’s do not have the ability to reset the BMS. Mine is 2009 and it does not come up as an option on the IID.
So does that mean that the only option is a wet battery and not an AGM?

Considering a new battery in the next few weeks for my 2016 D4.
Is the YUASA HSB019 battery still the best choice?
If I fit this does the BMS (battery management system) have to be reset?

It only comes with 4yr guarantee (3 elsewhere) when bought at Halfrauds and trade card softens the hit on your wallet .

Thanks everyone
I'm still not sure if I fit a YUASA HSB019 battery does the BMS (battery management system) have to be reset?
I currently have a Halfords AGM BATTERY AGM019 installed in May 2019 but now on its last legs.

re the bms reset i would think its needed as the new batt will have a new charging strategy and unless you reset the bms it wont know but saying that its prob not crucial but having a new batt fitted you may as well have it being charged at the optimal rate to ensure correct/long usage as there not cheap now
i fitted this to mine EK950 EXIDE START-STOP AGM CAR BATTERY 95AH 017 as it matched the original l/r batt fitted from new think i put the EA1000 EXIDE PREMIUM CAR BATTERY 12V 100AH - 017TE on the d3 the same time please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Why do Halfords not list the Yuasa 5019 as an option when you go online? I have a promotion code to get a bit more off and the do list it as a choice but not for the D4.
My car has just started to show glow plug light and waits on the press of the start button, plus I have the mystery speedometer needle intermittently illuminating making me think it’s time for a new battery.

I would have thought the wait after pressing the starter is down to the change in temperature we have seen. Mine is doing the same. Only for less than 5 seconds though ( estimate). Battery in good shape as far as I can tell (stop start working fine) and only 3 years old. Gary

Still doing that? Their fitters knew it was wrong not to list it when I bought mine.
I joined Halfrauds Motoring Club "free level" and claimed free battery fitting. They did a bms reset too.
@NJSS whilst I think bms reset isn't essential if doing like-for-like swap, it needs doing if you swap to/from AGM. .
