Discovery 4 Electronic Parking Brake EPB switch not working |
|
Oh the infamous Discovery 4 Electronic Parking Brake issue.
Hello All
I own a 2012 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE; it was driving fine last night at 20.00 but using it this morning at 10.00, there is now an issue. It was a cold night and today has been cold.
Location: South East England, on a farm, clay soil (lovely muddy winters, joyous dusty summers)
Driving: No off-roading but our access is by farm tracks, mainly road driving.
Warnings: Absolutely no indication that an issue was about to happen. No warning lights have appeared since.
Fuses: Both have been checked and are fine
Issue:
Disengaging the EPB: Car is running/ foot on the brake pedal/ Press EPB switch down– Nothing happens (Sound – none) (red Parking Brake Lamp stays on in the instrument cluster).
Works:
Disengaging the EPB: Car is running/ foot pressed down on accelerator- At a certain point, the EPB disengages, I do not feel brake resistance as the car moves (I cannot hear an EPB actuator noise. I cannot hear any brake rubbing noise) (red Parking Brake Lamp turns off).
Engaging the EPB: When I stop the car, I put the car into ‘P’/ pull up the EPB switch- The EPB engages, I can feel the Parking Brake is engaged (I can hear the EPB actuator move the Parking Brake) (red Parking Brake Lamp turns on).
I understand there can be numerous EPB issues, so I am wondering about a good place to start.
Does anyone have an idea where the problem may be?
As I cannot hear a rubbing/ grinding sound, am I going to do any damage using the car until I have fixed the issue?
Any help/ pointers would be much appreciated.
Thank you All

This happened to me a few weeks ago. Went to the mechanic and found out that the parking brake servo within the disc has failed ( my left side ).
Bought a new kit ( new left and right and replaced it ). Now it works fine.
If the main servo in the center fails, you will hear a loud noise.

Hello Hades76
Thank you for your input, I appreciate it!
All points noted.
For now, I have ordered a new EPB switch as that seems like the best (easiest) place to start (I am praying that will resolve the issue).
Update from my last post:
The dashboard now comes up with a parking brake warning message and a flashing red 'P' (EPB symbol) as I am driving (needless to say, I have stopped driving it). Still no unusual sounds.
I will give updates on my findings....

The Good News!
It was a simple (cheap and fast) replacement of the EPB switch! Phew!
So my information about weather, driving conditions etc. was irrelevant.
What I should have mentioned is that my wife* sometimes drives it and I allow the children* to clamber about (not on public roads of course) so....
Water, coffee, anything that spills is probably more relevant.
*Projection! Being a 'brave' and 'chivalrous' man-child, I have chosen to pass the blame onto my family (a well used and wise strategy)!
When I get a moment, I will detail how I replaced the switch....

No parking light , no sound , nothing .So thought it must be the parking brake switch , ordered a new one , before replacing the old one , I took it apart and the rockers that press down on the circuit board seemed to be stuck , loosened them replaced and worked fine . So at least I knew it was the switch , I still replaced it with the new one though . £90 for the new switch and 30min work , wish all disco repairs were like it 😂😂
