Discovery 4 Engine problem (not so powerful as before)? |
|
Hi all
I have a discovery 4 here in Hong Kong.
so here is the story begins
I got my D4 3 months ago, it was perfect in every single way, powerful, smooth etc...
Gradually the car has gain more n more KM, so when the car got to around 12000km, it felt like a 1000cc engine. what i can say its powerless.
then I brought to the dealer to get checked, but the dealer said "nothing wrong with it only need to change the engine oil n filter"
so I believed them. but when i picked up the car, it had roughly 70% of power, but still not as good as before.
Therefore, I would like to ask anyone here know what the problem is? how can I make it like new again
please let me know
regards
(sorry for me poor english)
kelvin
updated info
I forgot to mention that everytime when I start the engine, immediately the rev would jump from 800rpm to 1000rpm for a while before it go back down again.

Hiya
Not sure if this will be much help as the dealer was truly secretive over the issue... some mumbled explanation from the girl on reception about a vacuum pipe leading into the compressor having got trapped / constricted and they had been able to free this up...
Call me cynical but surely air comes out of the compressor.... unless the vacuum pipe is something that actuates it...
Dunno but the symptoms were much as you describe with a gradual loss of power and no warning lights etc of any description, just a 'gut feeling' that all was not well.
Still came back from the dealer with all the vim and vigour I expected.... D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

This sounds like what mine is doing. General loss of power, I used low ratio to manoeuvre around a friends sloping drive yesterday... There is a bit of smoke, but only visible on long hill climbs, the kind you probably don't find in Hong Kong...
What were you thinking Wiggs, turbo failure? __________________

Kelvin, is your D4 making any different noises? Mine is making a hissing sound under hard acceleration, not very loud, but you can definitely hear it. __________________

Mine is diesel.
I have noticed any difference in terms of noise. Buy the only thing that I noticed the most is the accelerate pedal feels heavier than before.
Still don't know why, or every single d4 has a different bhp?

Hi Kelvin,
I used to live in HK up to the end of 2007. It's most likely that your DPF has become blocked and the engine is either choked or trying to regenerate the filter. Given the traffic on HK Island (I assume you live there since you can afford a D4), you'll need to go over to NT or the airport and give it a 20 minute blast to clear the DPF. If you can set the cruise at 60 mph for 20 mins or so, the engine manageent system will hold the right revs to burn off the excess soot.
