Discovery 4 - Gearbox fault!
Discovered an issue with our Discovery 4 gearbox.
When shes cold she drives absolutely brilliant!! No slipping, no noises, smooth gear changes etc! You wouldn't even think there was an issue.
As soon as she gets warm/hot, she starts throwing a gearbox fault and has really jerky gear changes between 3/4 only, any other gears she drives perfect with no slipping.
Only recently getting the car and knowing the previous owner has never changed the gearbox oil we instantly thought transmission fluid.
Went out, managed to get about 2/3 litres out and it was black, we refilled them few litres with new transmission fluid and was discussing getting a mega flush with the local garage.
But then after we did this, the issue appeared to off stopped and now its restarted.
Plugged her in with ICAFSOFT and she came up with the following faults..
P2704 - Transmission friction element E apply time range/performance
P0783 - 3/4 shift
Got her home last night, left her all night again this morning driving absolutely perfect again!!
We are going to take her into local landrover garage. Just wondering what you all think the issue might be?

Has it been serviced correctly? I think the gearbox filter and pan gets changed at the 8th or 9th year service, so a bit of fresh oil should have gone in then.

A bit more information could be helpful, in respect of what year, what sort of usage has it had and who serviced it in the past. Also what transmission fluid did you put into it and how did you know how much to put in, was it through the filler plug or top hose if its a 6 speed?Must stop buying shiny toys....

Its got full service history, and all the receipts are here but there's absolutely nothing about transmission oil. The only things on any of the receipts for services are oil and fuel, so honestly don't think the transmission oil has ever been done.

Bought the car 2 weeks ago, no idea what they used the car for.
The car has full service history with receipts, but the receipts only mention fuel, air, cabin and oil absolutely nothing about transmission oil.
We gave the garage the reg and got some transmission oil from them, put the same amount in that we took out.

...must have the 6HP26 autobox then. oil change for sure would be my first task to tackle.
Once this is done I guess the next thing would be to put in Dr. Tranny and see how it works. If it does you have bought yourself time resp. mileage. After approx. 6.000 miles the effect will be gone.
New torque converter on the horizon I assume.Achim
