Discovery 4 - Gearbox stuck in ‘D’ |
|
Hi all,
New to the forum (but I’ve used it for advice many times) so please go gentle!
My other half came home this evening and before reversing up the drive, the discovery got stuck in Drive. We can’t move it out of the mode and it doesn’t seem to reset itself.
Managed to pull the brake release and move it into the village to minimise disruption.
Anyone have any ideas what may have caused this or what I can do?
(Since buying this car, I seem to now have turned into a mechanic, certainly a love/hate relationship!)

Is it the rotary gear selector that’s the issue? Several of us have had issues with these, mine reset itself after turning the ignition off and then back on but others have been less fortunate and needed a complete new unit. Do you have a code reader to check the codes?
Also search for “rotary gear selector” I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Yes, it appears to be. What’s strange is that it had its MOT on the same day, not sure if the garage has done something or if it’s a coincidence.
I don’t have a reader unfortunately, the AA are coming out this morning.
If it’s a new unit I’ve heard they cost about £400?

Yes but not great, from a £250 stated price, it’s about £320 by time they add vat & shipping. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

My mistake read it as including vat. A couple of examples on Ebay for around £200 but, they come from China. May be worth a punt. 2013 RR Vogue SE SDV8

If it needs replacing it’s worth checking out used centre consoles on eBay
I had one for a fridge that was fitted - I paid £130 for the whole unit and it had gear selector, armrest and all other switches fitted Must stop buying shiny toys....

They wait until you really really need to use the car and then fail... it's a special inbuilt redundancy thing with Land Rovers... there is a special sensor that tells the car when you need it most and then it fails a vital component at that moment ! If that doesn't happen it's only because that sensor has failed too
Good luck getting it sorted I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I had this problem recently but mine was stuck in Park
If it is because the shift lock solenoid is faulty there is a temporary workaround in this thread which works well:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-...blems.html
I set this workaround up but ended up replacing the rotary selector unit soon after as the issue became more and more frequent...
