Discovery 4 headlights not working

Hi people.

New to the site and I think this is my first post Laughing

Only bought the disco last week and it’s already giving me headaches. Decided to get some face lift rear lights and smarten up the rear a bit. Well after fitting and jumping in the drivers seat I noticed that the dipped beam wasn’t working also The led drl lights aren’t working. The high beam works fine. I’ve checked the fuses behind the glove box and also in the engine bay but can’t 100% confirm that I’m checking the right fuse?

Not sure if it’s got anything to do with changing the rear lights but it’s just wierd it’s happened.

Just to be clear it’s a discovery 4 xs 2012..

Cheers
Neil

Shouldn't create a problem unless there is an issue with the new lights - were they New LR ones or have they been on a D3 before and had resistors fitted?

Yours would have already been at the correct impedance so you wouldn't need extra resistors and if the wiring has been tampered with between the light units and their connector they may be incorrectly wired

Cheers for the quick reply. 😀

They are brand new off of eBay. I think they have the resistors fitted. I’m guessing the resistors are the little golden thing with a heat sink that’s been added on to the wiring of the light.

The thing is I changed back to the original rear lights and the headlights still didn’t work. 😩.

The quickest and easiest test is to put the old lights back on, and see if everything is cured. If it is, there's something wrong with the new lights, if not it's something else Thumbs Up

Edit. Was typing while you were!

Yeah that’s what I did but still not working.

What with the cracked inlet manifold and the limp mode my wife is Censored right off with the car. It was my idea to sell our year old qashqai to get this and it seems to be nothing but trouble already. Luckily we got it really cheap.

That’s what I keep saying to the mrs. She is comparing it all the time and saying the gashqai was better. It was a top of the range black edition so had a few more goodies than the disco. But we’ve bought a mid range older discovery so it’s bound to have less goodies. The discovery is a far better car and what with the snow it’s out performing the Nissan. But she’s just seeing the negatives! Women! 😩 once it’s fixed I’m sure she’ll love it.

Hi Neil,

I think your XS headlights are halogen not xenon which is why the fairy lights do not light up (they are just blanks). You can buy updated xenon light units and get them programmed in but this cannot be retrofitted to your current units which are widely regarded as being rubbish ... sorry

Oh that explains why the fairy lights have never worked. I’m not bothered at all about the fairy lights not working, my plan from day one is to upgrade to facelift xenon’s. Just trying to find the right set at the right price is posing a problem.

Believe it or not bulbs in both lights have been know to fail at the same time, you'll need new H7s, you could swap one from main to prove that's all it is Thumbs Up

That does seem a little hard to believe but il have a mess about tomorrow when it’s light and see what happens. Hopefully it is just the bulbs. I won’t bother buying new bulbs il just get the facelift xenons a bit sooner than I thought. Is there someone in Kent that anyone knows that can code in the new lights?

Well now the headlights definitely don’t work! 😂

Decided to facelift her today!

Ended up speaking to the mechanic that’s fitting the split intake manifold and he says he’s got an iid tool, so Il get them enabled on Tuesday when it goes in.

What Beanie says is right. On my last d4 (2010 XS) i started it up one night and the auto lights came on. Then there was a flash when the drivers side bulb blew, no more than 2 seconds later the passenger side blew Rolling Eyes

That is wierd. Well after connecting the new headlights the passenger side xenon worked for a while. I didn’t expect it to work at all until it gets plugged into iid. Hey ho. We should find out Tuesday if it’s a fault on the wiring or if it was the bulbs. Going into have some work done then so it can be the mechanics problem. 🙊
