As a non owner are any of the diesel discovery 4s immune to potential engine failure. Any advice would be helpful.

Not that I am aware of (but I am sure others will correct if I am wrong) - and to be perfectly honest, no engine is immune to failure either! Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
Previously:
TD5 Defender 110 CSW (230k miles)

4 RR Classics (300-350k each, 2 manual, 2 auto)

I'm guessing he means the spun bearings / crank snap / oil pump triplet. That's a no, the TDV6 2.7, TDV6 3.0 and SDV6 3.0 all susceptible to something. The TDV8 wasn't available in the Discovery but that also has its own problems. ____

I'd say any motor can be a risky buy, it all depends on how much you want to risk D4 GS let the retro fit begin
