Discovery electrics

Good morning all and thank you for letting me join, I bought my Discovery 4 in January as a tow vehicle for my twin axel caravan, I am over the moon with the car a 15 reg commercial with a rear seat conversion, Due to covid not been able to get away with the van, however came to plug in yesterday and then the fun started, with only my self to blame my 7 pin adaptor 🔌 would not fit in the fixed socket on the car, i got round this by unscrewing it and roughly plugin it in so i could make the journey from Ulverston to Skipton, My question is what do all you existing Discovery owners that pull caravans do,

Thanks in advance.

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying that the car has a 13-pin socket and your caravan has 2 x 7-pin plugs so you need an adapter? If so, you can get a 2 into 1 adapter (either way). Or, is it that you have an adapter but it wont fit the socket? On my car, the 13-pin socket was factory fitted, and is mounted sideways. On my ‘old’ car, it was fitted so the cover lifted upwards, so I cut off one of the lugs on the adapter so that it would turn fully if that makes sense?

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I'm not sure I fully understand your question?

What connection does you Disco have? Two sockets (7 pin S + N) sockets or one 13 pin socket?

Does your caravan have 7 pin S + N or 13 pin plug?

I don't tow a caravan, just the odd horse trailer/normal trailer every now and then, but I just carry adapters and they seem to work fine.

You could always swap the tow electrics to suit the caravan you tow. If it's genuine LR then you'll only need to buy the socket end of the wiring loom and plug it in.

I'm sure someone else will be along to help soon though.

Hi, and welcome...

I tow(ed) a caravan and use a 13 pin car to 7 N&S caravan adaptor with no issues. As said above the socket on the Disco mounts at 90 degrees to the vertical so you need to insert the caravan pin in at the same rotated angle.

If the socket has been mounted correctly the cover should open toward the centre of the car... if it mounted towards the outside of the car you will struggle to get the electrics connected as the cover will get in the way. Easy enough to undo the retaining screws (don’t lose the nut on the back) and rotate to how it should be.

If the issue is different please post a photo to help us understand Thumbs Up
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
