Actually, yes, I agree Moo. As long as it doesn't impact those around them.

Ridiculous. i'm no English language wizard, but this application is clearly wrong. They/them are plural terms. Even if he cannot work out if he's male or female - there's still only one of him!

They/them have been used as singular pronouns for several hundred years. Thumbs Up

Its use is quite common: "if anyone is unhappy with the situation, they may come and see me later" for example, might often be heard in a school classroom, or an office meeting room.

Not entirely correct due to application. In your classroom example, the person is addressing a collective, therefore, "they". If someone was addressing one person, they wouldn't use "they" they would use "you": "If you are unhappy, you may come and see me later ". You cannot address a singular person as "they", it is incorrect.

The use of "they" as a singular pronoun dates back to the 14th Century. It is perfectly correct to use it thus.

In my classroom example, the "they" refers to the "anyone" at the start of the sentence. That the sentence is spoken to a group is irrelevant, the subject is an individual.

Clearly it refers to more than one person. Anyway, you can refer to them any way you choose. Let's leave it there.

As stated, its use as a singular pronoun goes back almost as far as its use as a plural pronoun. But hey, let's not worry about the details.

I wonder if people would be so upset by the particular use of language if it wasn't being used by "them"... Rolling Eyes

Hauling out the victim card, and trying to portray people as anti, still does not validate the use of "them" as a singular term. But hey, let's not jump on any PC bandwagon.

At the risk of getting concussion from banging my head against a wall, the use of "they" as a singular pronoun goes back for several hundred years. It is perfectly valid English.

Just because your use of the English language is limited, does not mean others must limit their own use to match yours. Non-PC, no victims inferred. Happier now? Thumbs Up
