One could say you don't need a 4x4 for towing a tintent at all When you pull up on the campsite the amount of standard cars with caravans you see always out numbers the 4x4s. The car you need depends on what you tow horses for courses.
Having driven a few 23/24plate Volvos I'll agree they are a great car I just hate the infotainment systems to much tech for very little gain whats wrong with a Tomtom stuck to the windscreen .
I always find with the D4 whatever you're towing you don't get pushed around by the trailer like on some of LRs other models D5, new Defender. I'll agree the D4 can be a bit Harsh with the van on but I've been looking into the sliding towball mounts and having experienced one on a mates D3 I'm convinced its the way to go.D4 GS let the retro fit begin

Hi, have you got details of the sliding towball your pal has?
I think the jumping about is the higher CofG which is hard to get round with that level of ground clearance. Also just a case of getting used to that vehicle. After VW T5 the disco felt a bit harsh but after 100 miles each way in disco I was loving it again.

LWB Version and i must say must be the shape i found it rock steadiy to tow than the D3 which i find twitchy and seems to jump around a bit. Saved me a good bit on diesel as well as done 23mpg. There was enough power on all but the steepest of hills where I was down to third!
Only thing i found awkwardly different was sitting so near the front of the 13.6m wagon train. Much nicer in the D3 to sit nearer the center.
Before I went into RR ownership I had an early T5 (2.5 5-pot & tweaked) LWB & it made a superb towing vehicle towing a variety of dropside & box trailers.
As an aside, for me the capatains seats were far more comfortable than the those in the L322 or L320.
