Don't make my mistake!

If you're thinking of getting rid of your D4, make sure that you're doing the right thing.

We had a beautiful 2016 Landmark that we'd owned for six years, and apart from having to have a new prop shaft (split centre bearing) at the back end of last year, it had been pretty much faultless. However, it was time to move on, or so I thought.

I went on the Range Rover Sport (L494) launch in 2012/13 and always liked the look of the things, so ended up with a 2021 D300 HSE Dynamic with a few extras. What a mistake! Yes, it goes well, has much more up to date technology and will return a genuine 40 MPG, but it's no where near as practical as the D4 (we don't need 7 seats, but all the little cubbies and the seats folding totally flat in the D4 made it so much better) and is soooooo boring with a horrible ride to boot!

Sadly, without taking a big hit (which I can't really afford) it looks like we're stuck with it. It's my fault, and mine alone, but an expensive mistake. Unfortunately, my D4 went onto a forecourt and was snapped up in a couple of days (it really was in great shape and had only covered 57,000 miles - no short journeys!). Ah well..........

Someone recently asked if the D4 was the pinnacle of LR. Without a doubt in my mind.

I suppose that I'm preaching to the converted, but.......... Big Cry

As a recent buyer of a 2016 landmark.

It’s definitely a very practical car, I can stick my son’s pram in the boot without worrying if it will fit.
It does fit in the freeby 2 but you have to turn it side on…

My old and much loved D3 did have a few extra cubby slots over the D4.
But the 3.0 and 8 speed is a much nicer drive.
 In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Rest well old friend, your work is done.

The only thing that keeps me away from Discovery’s now is the V6.

If LR fitted the V8 diesel from factory, they’d be fetching Toyota Land Cruiser money.

Prior to owning the 2016 car, we had a MY2010 HSE for six years, and a 2005 D3 SE before that. The D3 was the most problematic, but in the main things sticking rather than breaking.

One of the reasons that we went with the D300 was because of the question mark over the V6, BUT neither the 2.7 or the 3.0's gave any engine trouble, so it was probably more in my mind than reality. As for a Toyota Landcruiser, yes, they may have a perceived reliability (don't mention the name to an old friend of mine who bought one new and the engine let go at about 50,000 miles - and it was fastidiously maintained), but having done some dynamic testing with them (and lots of other cars) when towing, they are about as poor as it gets, and certainly not the safest thing when towing. Hopefully, the new version will be better and much more refined?

Me too. They certainly have an understated presence and just look right anywhere.

I did exactly the same, went from having had six Disco’s to a RRS because l always liked the look of them. BIG MISTAKE for all the same reasons. It’s a nice car but l just cannot klick with it. Biggest problem is that the boss never liked them and only very reluctantly agreed to the change - she never lets me forget it!

Still miss my D3, though not the warp-drive spending it needed. Don’t miss my D4 even though it was a much better car and just needed “standard” maintenance. D3 was like a well worn pair of loafers, D4 a new set of brogues.

Not that I’m tempted back after 6 years, waaaaaaaaaaay too used to stress free motoring! Laughing Laughing

That was my thinking, but there comes a point Laughing …I have owned and maintained my D3 for nearly 19 years 😳 By far, the longest I have ever owned any vehicle. But now, its value is quite low, and I will be reluctant to spend money on it if anything crops up soon. It still is a great all round vehicle, and just done a trip up to N.Yorks and back in it, it never missed a beat, and needs nothing doing to it at present. Definitely not ready to be a ‘scrapper’ Laughing but I have just arranged through the TFL scrappage scheme, which is about to end soon, to donate it to the Ukraine war effort. So it will be going next month, hopefully to save some lives. The end of an era, it will be a sad day indeed. Big Cry Big Cry

That’s lovely, sad and good all in a post.

At least you’ve had 19 years of good times with it and that it will make a difference in Ukraine. Fair playti you. Bow down

Thanks Moo, I think it’s definitely the right thing to do, I’ve had my time with it now, it has been a good vehicle over the years. Thumbs Up

I did drive the new Defender, quite harshly at “The Land Rover Experience”. Was quite impressed until the instructor said “there is nothing we did, that your Disco4 can’t do.”. Couple that with the motorway and city ride, I’m sticking with it as long as I can.

Thank you all for the confirmations.
