A dozey question ?

Hi all
new the the forum & to the car also. Had the car 2/3 weeks. 7 seats v6 with lots of extras apparently..inc bluetooth which I have to say is brillant.
my husband has been told that when changing tyres over due to wear that you should change a min of two if not the whole 4 ? never heard of that before... we have scopions on an 18"
should you also change front to back (you can tell I've never had a 4x4 before !!)

As far as I am concerned (and I am no expert either) - if you need to change one tyre - then both on the same axel should be changed at the same time - unless of course there is very little wear on the good tyre.

As for moving tyres - I have always worked on the following (normally carried out by the garage when it's in for a service)

Front Nearside to Rear Offside

Front Offside to Rear Nearside

Rear Nearside to Front Offside.................you'll see a pattern here Whistle

Rear Offside to Front Nearside

There is no law to say how many tyres you have to change when one is illegal simply replace as required. The reason for swapping them around on the car is to ensure you get even wear throughout all 5 tyres. Then you will have to replace all 5 at the same time. Thumbs Up

I think the question was more about putting on a new tyre due to a worn (out) one........ Whistle

Basically, there is nothing wrong with changing a single worn tyre for a new one. However, if it were me I'd suggest the following:

Keep tyre model/type the same on each axle.
Don't be frugal - if you are going to need to change the other side soon, just do them both at the same time.

There is no specific need to change 2 or 4 tyres just because 1 single tyre is worn or punctured (unlike a Volvo V70 AWD Rolling Eyes )

Some low profile sports tyres work beter being the same type on the axle, ie 2 x Perelli P-0 rather than 1 x Perelli and 1 x Avon etc etc.

I would say NEVER run with two different tyres on the same axle.
[unless only temporary ie puncture]
IMO it would be bad enough with different makes on each axle.
Tyres are specifically designed for certain performance criteria.
What is a set criteria for one manufacturer may be different to that of another.

Also [like JMC states] I would never run with a brand new tyre and an old near worn tyre on the same axle.
 ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

It is a legal requirement in Spain to have the same brand, model and size of tyre on the same axle. And it is a ITV (MOT) failure.
Not sure about the UK though?
