I have taken a take-up reel apart before now and wound the spring an extra turn.

Much like a clock spring so needed to be careful that it didn't release completely.

It solved the return because it would fully retract but it was quite tight on full extraction. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.
