Hi we are thinking of shipping our D3 over to Canada, driving through the USA and then right the way down the Panamerican Highway. Has anyone else taken a Discovery there? Will there be any special problems with having a right hand drive car there? Any other advice? I am very excited about the project, and we will be spending the next year or so exploring Europe, so we have some time to plan the big trip.

You probably know this website:-

If not it's worth a good read:-
Quote: Only a handful of extremely well outfitted 4x4 expeditions have managed to drive through the gap. It's extreme 4x4ing and not without serious risks.
99.9999% of all people crossing the Daren Gap ship their vehicle in one way or another.
I think the PAH is complete now apart from the Daren Gap - however you may find sections unfinished or in an impassable state of repair. That was certainly the case when I drove (a tiny) part of it 15 years ago.
There are lots of good websites and don't forget the advice from Sir Winston Chruchill who said:-
Quote:He who fails to plan, plans to fail
Good luck, it will be a great adventure.

I shipped my Disco 3 to USA in 2007 & had no problems other than at Truck stops, the nozzle at Diesel pumps is too big for the filler neck, so I had to be careful.
Have a great journey

I souldn't think you would have any problems.
Fuel quality might be the only concern.
The Pan American High Way isnt really a high way more like a good county road or state highway in this country.

Thanks for the advice and links guys. Is there a problem with diesel quality in South America. Can the d3 cope with it?

The Diesel in the lesser developed countries has a higher Sulfur content which can cause problems long term to the catalytic converters. Not having firsthand knowledge of these Landy Diesel power plants I don't know how they will react, just something to look into.

When I was in Belize, I saw a few D3's, and checking on LR's website, they do sell the Diesel ones there, so I assume they must run fine in Central America. But who knows, I never talked to any of the owners.
I don't recall ever seeing one in Mexico though, but most of my time in Mexico is in Cozumel, the weight of the D3 would sink the ferry

Thanks for that. I guess we will just have to take a chance and replace the cat if it goes pear shaped.... Has anyone seen D3s further south?

LR3 designed for ultra low sulphur level diesel fuel (less than 50 parts/million sulphur), LR recommend halving engine oil change intervals if sulphur level is higher.
