Driving Lights ...
I had the 'driving lights' (LR spot-lamps and rubber nudge bar) installed a few days back. I have to say that they're a bit wimpy on high beam, especially with the excellent head lights already in place.
Are there any recommendations on lamps I should use to replace those supplied so I get retina-seering brightness?

Get some HID lights, that'll do it. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I got them on the back of a very large order placed by LR, so a very good deal..... Could never justify the RRP for lights however good they may be . Think my wife would see stopping the house falling appart more of a priority!Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

I thought exactly the same when i had mine fitted. Lamps look good but dont exactly do much. I changed bulbs for some xenon gas ones (alledgedly 90% brighter from Halfords) might try 100W ones next
I seem to remember reading that 100 watt bulbs melt LR driving lamps.Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

So can anyone tell me what the max wattage is I can fit with the standard wiring, without melting the fittings.
Talking of fittings - my lamps will turn and swivel by hand - I can;t imagine being able to set them solid to throw the beam to a particular spot. I had a play around with some other cars that were at the lot as well, and their driving lights were the same. Is this right, or has the same bloke fitted all the lights incorrectly?

remove the small LR logos from the lamps.Position can be locked by inserting a screwdriver into the hole and turning.

Hmmm ... I'll have a look at that at the end of the working day, but for now, I've had a look at the installation book-thingy on-line and I see what you mean. But I seem to think that I can turn prety much the whole lamp and that the screw for adjusting the dip might not fix that. Won't know until I try, so thanks.
But a proper fixing should be solid and directional and not easily moveable, right?

Yep it should be nore solid I agree. But , the screw I mentioned does lock the housing in all directions , but it is weak.I wouldn't go for a 100 w bulb if I were you.I'd say it would melt the reflector especially if you were stationary for any length of time.I just put a branded part xenon bulb in mine , made minimal difference. If you were keen on keeping the LR lamps then I would maybe trya cheap HID kit retrofit.Other than that I'd trade up toa Hella , Lightforce , PIAA etc.
good Luck !

Cool ...
I actually understand a bit more what the ligths are for now. I admit I thought that they'd give me better distance illumination, but that's why folks mount spots on their roof-racks, isn't it.
I know from driving though the desert at night in my old Disco that the high beam would throw a-ways in front of you, which left a darker area in that kind of 'not quite dipped, not quite dazzled' zone infront of the car. I used to drive pulling the stalk half-way so I'd get all the lamps on to solve this. I now realise that the 'driving lamps' are really to fill that void.
It's all good, just a question of tweaking.

I think on a D3 (at least with Xenon on an HSE) the dipped stay on when going to main beam anyway, so no halfway pull required!
100w usually ok in a decent driving lamp, depends on the reflector, and the speed you are going. What works in the UK climate, might not be good in the warmer parts of the world!
XTC - your roof rack job is super-neat - guess you had to cut the rack to mount them like that
