Droning noise from front!!!

No not me starting a sentance with "Don't get me started on ............" but a weird droning noise that has been getting worse over the last 1000 miles or so. Initially the noise was low key, mainly heard about 40mph and as if the engine wanted a higher gear. Above 40 road and engine noise covered it. Just done 450 miles down to the Midlands and the noise is getting more noticeable, can now hear it at 60 to 70mph, although I have been fighting against a well wicked headwind today. It was as if I was on AT or muds but this is SWMBOs (06MY TDV6 Auto) car and is on 17" Contis that have done 5k miles.

The noise is road speed dependant and seems to be worse on rougher tarmac, it also does't change if I put it into neutral and coast down a hill. It is no different on straights or round bends, also no change if braking except the pitch reduces as the car slows. Can't totally nail it down to the front but pretty sure it is from that direction.

It's not at the stage I can take it to a dealer and say "There's a funny noise, please fix it". Any thoughts oh wise techie sages???? Question Question Question

(1) Ask SWMBO to step out of car.

(2) Test drive car.

(3) Confirm that droning was from SWMBO.

(4) Carry on as normal.

Had a similar (what the hell is that noise) that "sounds" similar in nature. Although it stayed the same with air con on or off, it turned out to be the pulley bearing on the aircon pump . . .

So will we all hear you rounding the M25 as you get nearer to the cross in hand pub ?

That was what I was wondering!!!! As long as it gets me the next 150 miles to Countryman course, after that I'm not too worried.

NJF it's been great, keeps SWMBO quiet for ages trying to hear the noise!!!

Wheel bearings. Easy to check, just jack up and see if there is any movement.

I drove to South of France and back with a noisy bearing.

When you do take to dealers you'll need road tyres on. They then used diagnostic listening "ears" to pinpoint the culprit component.

When front left wheel bearing went on my D3 it was felt through the steering wheel, esp when going round bends. Hmmm, might be rear bearings. I don't think JMC had any go and be replaced under warranty.

She's already on road tyres awaiting the diagnostic ear and will put her up on stands when I get back from Hairyman Course (Mrs DSL's description!!!). Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Yep, had that one too, but distinguished itself as being purely rev dependend i.e. clearly heard and varies with revs even when stationary.
There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song
