Dumbing down of the English language |
|
I was appalled to read that Dozens of words were removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary in order to make room for modern technology-related words!
Surely they could add a page or two to the dictionary?
Words removed included:-
aisle
ash
beech
bishop
chapel
conker
empire
monarch
newt
otter
Most interesting was that blackberry was removed; and replaced by Blackberry (TM) !
Surely the Oxford Junior Dictionary should strive to educate, and ensure children have a reasonable vocabulary ?
Removing words like aisle, bishop & chapel makes me wonder if they are being politically correct in dropping Christian terms?

To be honest, I don’t think it makes any difference. Children are as likely to know what the excluded words no matter if they are found in a dictionary or not.
As for the suggestion they are ridding the dictionary of Christian terms because they arent PC, I don’t think that’s got anything to do with it one minuet. It’s probably just down to children’s language usage.

Interesting as schools are trying more and more to get kids outside as it builds resilience, team building and problem solving amongst others, the Forest School movement is particularly strong. Half of those words are outdoors related
I have no problem with kids and technology but being techy and outdoorsy aren’t mutually exclusive. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Looking at your link, it's clear that more nature related terms were removed from the book than Christian terms.
No doubt this is a reflection of the reality of the lives of the majority of young people - they are urban and, thankfully, increasingly secular. It's not a "dumbing down" of the language, rather a reflection of the living language evolving.
The full dictionary still contains those words so they aren't being deleted from the language. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: SIT DOWN AND TALK!"
