Dumfries & Galloway - what to see & do?
Being dragged up to Gatehouse of Fleet there on Sat by mrs ronp for a (free) week in her sisters mobile home (that's not mobile )
So what's to see and do (with no kids) in that area and that's not overly busy, tacky or commercial.
Note: I know SN raised a thread on the area a few weeks ago, but that was to discuss midges....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Some of this may chime but huntin, shootin, fishin, golfin and drinkin.
Got the medals as I write still tickles me now going in to the bars and asking bar staff " have you got a Pig's Nose?" Never went down well but amused me.

Well Kircudbright (just to the east) is nice to wander around - arty and antiquey type of place. Wigton is chock full of second hand bookshops so maybe worth a visit. Other than that, lots of beaches along that southern coast and up towards Kippford and Rockcliffe. I have a vague memory of a drive through the Galloway forest park just north of you. That could be your reward after a day of antique shops.D1 300Tdi - gone

Mull of Galloway has RSPB, views are quite spectacular (if the weather is good!) Logan Botanical gardens if you like that sort of thing. The forest drives should still be open and there is a Kite trail with feeding station.

If you're into outdoors stuff, Galloway is a fantastic place.
If you depend on others (or alcohol) for your entertainment then your s out of luck
Even the best pubs don't server proper (ie cask) beer though there are some good eateries.
Wigtown is a good place to visit, particularly if you like to read.
Galloway Forest Park is excellent. Drive the Raiders Road.
Plenty of nice beaches (if the weather is OK).
Other than that ? well, Newcastle or Glasgow aren't that far
PS: beware of the midges

Yeah I would recommend the Red kite feeding station, as I remember they feed them at 2pm but please check don't take my word for it
be very very careful on the roads that feed the ferries & a few more..
The Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary are very very active & relentless..the speed limit between Dumfries & Stranraer is 60mph even on the dual carriageways that would be 70 anywhere else.
++++ be very careful on back roads too
They are in unmarked cars, in jam sandwiches, hiding behind trees...everywhere.
there is a very nice botanical garden below Stranraer, the Haugh of Urr is worth driving to, Devils Porridge museum & the tribute area to the Locharbie plane bomb.
Other than that very nice sceneryBREXIT - done properly.

Cream Of Galloway is cool especially if you have kids, the ice cream is amazing. The only thing I would say is the factor tour is fun because you get to taste a few flavours but the reality is the factory is one room and the tour involves you looking down from a viewing gallery. If I went again I would spend the tour money on a couple of tubs of ice cream. Cinnamon flavour is gorgeous
Cocobean is cool to but again more aimed at families but they do have nice food and free Wifi(phone signal in the whole area isn't great on any network)
Not far from both is the David Coulthard museum/cafe not sure when it's open though
There is a restuarant/pub on the side of the road on the way to Gatehouse looks like it's in a semi derelict castle, had great meal in there.
If you want some simple pub food then the Borgue Hotel is worth a look, run by a lovely couple, dog running around. They do a lovely curry.
The chippy down by the docks in Kirkcudbright is a must visit, they only cook to order and have probably the biggest selection I've ever seen including stuff like Monkfish and Sea Bass. They have seating but it does get busy.They are literally 30m from the docks. http://www.polarbites.co.uk/take-away-menu/
The coast road from Kirkcudbright to Borgue is a nice ride, you can get back on the road to Gatehouse in Borgue
If you like to travel early then I can recommend the breakfast in Teebay services, all the food is good there North or Southbound, not the usual motorway chain crap
Fuel stations aren't that common out near Gatehouse especially not 24hrs, Kirkcudbright has a station where you pay at a machine then fill up(not the normal pay at machine type) it's next to the docks.
When I last went the there was a petrol station at the beginning of the A74 next to what used to be a Little Chef/Happy Eater who were pretty cheap, worth filling up there.IID PRO

theres a cross roads in the village...ask in the post office...its so small you wont go wrong...single track and plenty wind farm building going on...interesting in itself.....if your going north from new luce you will be on the rite road...middle of nowhere great
