DVD Update Disc

My car is now one year old, the DVD disc has a version date of 2003 and I was thinking it is time for an update. I have spoken to two dealers, none of which seem to know anything about an update service other than to offer to sell me one for over £200 without any information as to what or how much has been updated. I optimistically spoke to customer services at Land Rover and they knew about as little the dealers. I would have expected this situation would lend itself very well to a regular subscription update service as the new discs can come out.

Has anyone got any further?

DVD Update

Hi,

If the D3 Update DVD works along a similar model to other manufacturers then you just purchase a new DVD for the current year as you wish. There are almost certainly changes in mapping information and points of interest. Not sure who makes the LR DVD but NavTeq would be the most likely. However it's often more reliable to purchase the DVD from LR rather than NavTeq.

£220 still seems like a lot of money for an update!

At that money LR are leaving themselves wide open to illegal copying of later versions of the DVD! Assuming it's possible!
Not that I would advocate such activities.

If the disc was say £50 it might seem more reasonable.
A colleague of mine uses a TOMTOM and says that the updates mainly cover new user features and POI's.
Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

I have tried putting my DVD disc into my PC to see if it can be read, it contains just under 8 GB of data the files copy to my PC readily, but standard DVD recordable discs only hold 4.7 GB. I was therefore not able to make a backup. If the update disks were a reasonable price I would be more than happy to subscribe to a regular update. I have not been able to locate any DVDs other than from a Land Rover dealer at a rather prohibitive price.

PS I believe there are double layer discs which need to be written with a double layer recorder which hold more than 8 GB of data!

Dual layer discs will record up to 9.4gb of data.

They are rather more expensive than single layer ones, but useful for occasions such as these where you might wish to create a back up. I would not be impressed if I knackered the disc and had to shell out for a new one.

You will need a dual layer dvd burner- although almost all recent ones do this these days.

Do a backup of your existing one, then try in the nav system.

Chances are that it will work fine. Shouldn't cause any damage to the system. [disclaimer: I know nothing. Try at your own peril]
